China Ethnic Groups

According to the sixth census statistics in 2010, the Han people, numbering 1,225,932,641, makes up 91.51% of China’s population. Meanwhile, because of the favorable generational policy that minority ethnic groups could have two children, the population of Ethnic Minorities in China increases by 6.92% while Han people goes up 5.74%. In terms of population, the major minority ethnic groups are Zhuang, Manchu, Hui, Miao, Uyghur, Tujia, Yi, Mogol, Tibetan, Buyei, Dong, Yao, Korean, Bai, Hani, Kazakh,Li, and Dai.

Bai People
As a romantic ethnic group, Bai people center on Dali, Yunnan. Architecture, poetry, sculpture and tea are their most defining cultural symbol.Xizhou is the best place to sample their stunning folk residences which mirror the strong influence of Han culture. Mongolian Nationality
“Mongol” means “everlasting fire”. The Mongolians is a legendary nomadic tribe found in Inner Mongolia, Mongolia and Russia. The empire they built during Yuan dynasty is the biggest one ever existed in history. Xanadu (Shangdu) in Xilingol has witnessed the epic rising and fall of Ghegis Khan and his empire. Now, it been enlisted into UNESCO Heritage Site. Naadam Festival is the grandest festival. Khoomei is their fossil music, which is recognized as World Intangible Heritage.

Dai Nationality
Known as people of peacock and water, Dai Minority, an ancient ethnic group in Yunnan Province, China, is a large and prosperous ethnic group with colorful cultures. It’s famous for its Water Splashing Festival, the peacock dance, and marvelous Buddhist architectures like Jinzhen Octagonal Pagoda, Manfeilong White Pagoda and Manchunman Buddhist Temple etc.

Naxi Nationality
Naxi people are very interesting, women work like men and men enjoy life like noble ladies. Mosuo people, a branch of Naxi Nationality, practice “Walking Marriage”, which an alternative to marriage. At the core of Naxi people’s culture is the time-honored Dongba Culture embodied by painting, script, music, dance and rituals,etc. Baisha Village is the place to enjoy Dongba paintings and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the abode of San Duo, their protection God.

Dong People
Dong People are famous for Kam Grand Choirs, Wind-Rain Bridges, drum towers,embroidery and self-made fabrics. Dong Nationality Villages in Southeast Guizhou Province: The Villages of Dong Nationality-Liudong and Jiudong Villages have been listed into the tentative list of UNESCO Heritage Site.

Tibet Ethnic Group
The Tibetans with a population of 5.4 million mostly live in the Tibet Autonomous Region. There are also Tibetan communities in Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces.The Tibetan language belongs to the Tibetan sub-branch of the Tibetan-Myanmese language branch of the Chinese-Tibetan language family.

Hani Ethnic Group
Hani people are famous for Yuanyang Rice Terraces, Mushroom House, colorful festivals including Hani New Year Festivals named of Liu Yue Nian and Shi Yue Nian respectively. Hani cuisine is very famous also.

Hui Ethnic Group
With a sizable population of over 9.81 million, the Hui ethnic group is one of China’s largest ethnic minorities. People of Hui origin can be found in most of the counties and cities throughout the country, especially in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Gansu, Qinghai, Henan, Hebei, Shandong and Yunnan provinces and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Manchu Ethnic Group
Manchu Ethnic Group virtually scattered over all of China, the largest group, about 46.2 percent of the total, live in Liaoning Province, and the rest mostly in Jilin, Heilongjiang, Hebei, Beijing, Gansu, Shandong, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Ningxia, as well as in Chengdu, Xi’an, Guangzhou and other cities. Nanchu people speak Manchu (in both script and spoken language) and Han (standard Chinese) and their Religion isShamanism.

Miao People
Miao People are famous for silver ornaments, embroidery, stilt houses and colorful festivals including Miao New Year, Sisters’ Meal Festival, Guzang Festival and Reed-Pipe Dance Festival, ect.

Tujia Nationality
Tujia People are the mysterious witchcraft tribe in southwest China’s Hunnan, Hubei and Chongqing.

Uygur Ethnic Group
The majority of Uygur ethnic people in Xinjiang live in the areas of Hotan, Kashi and Aksu, south of the Tianshan Mountains.According to the 2003 census, there were 8,823,500 Uygur residents in Xinjiang. With 45.62 percent of the region’s population they are its largest ethnic group.The Uygur language belongs to the Turkic branch of the Altaic language family. Its written form is based on Arabic script. The word “Uygur” itself means “unity” or “alliance,” describing the ethnic group’s formation.

Yao Nationality
Mainly distributed in Guangxi, Hunan, Yunnan and Guangdong province, Yao people are famous for Panwang Festival, Long Drum Dance and medicinal baths. Top places to unravel Yao culture including Yao Nationality Village of Nangang, Sanpai Yao Village and Huangluo Yao Village.

Yi Ethnic Group
Famed as the People of Fire, Yi Nationality scatter extensively in southwest China. It is the largest ethnic group living in Yunnan. They live on farming and hunting, and have created language, script and calendar of their own. Yi cuisine features salty, aromatic, spicy and pungent flavor. Important festivals including Torch Festival, Yi New Year and Tiger Dance Festival. Alu Anceint Cave and The Ancient Town of Yi Nationality are top places to sample Yi culture.

Zhuang Nationality
As the largest ethnic group in China, Zhuang Nationality mainly scatter in South China Karst areas, such as Guangxi and Guizhou. Gexu Festival (Sanyuesan) is the biggest Zhuang festival. Guilin, Ping’an Zhuang Village, Jinzhu Zhuang Village, Bamei Village, Langzi Ancient Village, Nayan Ancient Town and Huashan Fresco are top places to sample Zhuang culture.

Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
