The Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center is famous for its endeavoring work in protection of endangered species such as giant pandas, small pandas and black-necked cranes. It was awarded “The Global Top 500 in Environmental Protection” by the United Nations, and Chinese Green Science Prize by the state government. The center is also an educational base for the state’s scientific knowledge popularization and a workstation for young people who have attained doctorate degrees.
Originally the giant pandas were living in the dense forest on the mountains around Chengdu, but the deteriorating natural environment made their life becoming miserable. Now the breeding base is a man-made safe haven for the pandas. In the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center is a delivery room, fodder rooms, sleeping quarters, a sport ground and a medical station. The center gathers all the panda families. In every year there are many new panda babies born here, thus the breeding center has become the largest man-bred panda group in the world.

The Panda Breeding and Research Center is surrounded by verdant hills, green forests and clear lakes with many kinds of bird flying and singing. The elegant-looking black-neck cranes, black and white swans are leisurely cruising on the tranquil lake. On the meadow, the green peacocks are roaming and demonstrating their majestic tail feathers. Birds from far away, are coming to play a part of the scene. Beside these beautiful sights, the world’s first Giant Panda Museum, China’s largest Butterfly and Vertebrate Museums are here. These exhibition venues display about 1200 kinds of specimen of rare animals and endangered species, which include the giant pandas, birds, fish and insects, as well as a library with thousands of books and documents about animals from China and foreign countries.
The center also has food and beverage facilities and provides services such as tour guide, accommodations and tent renting for camping.
