Why China Should Be on Every Traveler’s Bucket List

China is a destination that offers far more than a single travel experience. From ancient capitals and UNESCO-listed landmarks to breathtaking natural scenery and dynamic modern cities, every journey reveals a different side of the country. For overseas travelers, China is not only a place to visit, but also a place to explore, experience, and remember.

If you are planning a trip to China for the first time, choosing the right destinations can make all the difference. The following places are among the most iconic and rewarding stops for international visitors, offering a well-rounded introduction to China’s history, culture, landscape, and lifestyle.

Beijing: Where China’s History Begins

Beijing is often the first stop for overseas visitors, and it is easy to see why. As China’s capital, it welcomes travelers with a remarkable collection of historical treasures, including the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace. Each of these landmarks offers a memorable glimpse into China’s imperial history and timeless architectural beauty. For visitors eager to understand the country’s cultural roots, Beijing is an ideal place to begin. Blending ancient traditions with the energy of modern life, the city leaves a lasting impression on every China journey.

Xi’an: A Journey into Ancient Civilization

Xi’an is one of China’s most historically significant cities, with deep cultural roots and a legacy as a former imperial capital. It is best known for the Terracotta Army, one of the world’s most extraordinary archaeological discoveries, but the city’s appeal goes far beyond this famous site. Ancient city walls, elegant pagodas, and historic neighborhoods all add to Xi’an’s distinctive charm and atmosphere.

Terracotta Army

For overseas travelers interested in history, archaeology, and the Silk Road, Xi’an is a truly essential destination. It offers a deeper understanding of China’s ancient civilization and remains one of the best places to experience the country’s long and fascinating past.

Shanghai: The Face of Modern China

Shanghai is often where overseas travelers first discover China’s contemporary side. As one of the country’s most international cities, it is famous for its striking skyline, elegant waterfront, historic architecture, and lively city atmosphere. The Bund, Pudong, Yu Garden, and the former concession areas come together to create an experience that feels both cosmopolitan and distinctly Chinese.

For visitors who want to see how China has grown into a modern, fast-moving, and highly connected society, Shanghai is an essential stop. It is especially appealing to travelers who enjoy urban exploration, shopping, dining, and the contrast between old and new.

Guilin and Yangshuo: China’s Classic Landscape

Guilin and Yangshuo are among the most beloved natural destinations in China. With their dramatic limestone peaks, peaceful rivers, and charming countryside scenery, they offer the kind of landscape that has inspired Chinese paintings and poetry for centuries. For many overseas visitors, this is where they discover a softer and more poetic side of China.

Yangshuo adds a relaxed and welcoming travel atmosphere, with opportunities for cycling, river cruising, and enjoying the countryside at an easy pace. Together, Guilin and Yangshuo are perfect for travelers seeking natural beauty, memorable photography, and a slower, more refreshing travel experience.

Zhangjiajie: A Landscape Like No Other

Zhangjiajie is famous for its dramatic sandstone pillars, misty valleys, and breathtaking mountain scenery. Its extraordinary landscape has made it one of the most visually striking destinations in China, and for many visitors, it also feels like the real-life inspiration behind the floating mountains seen in Avatar.

For nature lovers, hikers, and photography enthusiasts, Zhangjiajie offers an unforgettable experience. It is a destination that highlights the remarkable natural diversity of China and fills travelers with a genuine sense of wonder.

Chengdu: Culture, Cuisine, and Comfort

Chengdu is one of China’s most beloved cities, especially for overseas visitors who appreciate good food, rich culture, and a relaxed pace of travel. While it is home to the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, the city’s charm extends far beyond pandas. Its traditional tea houses, world-famous Sichuan cuisine, and easygoing atmosphere make Chengdu a place where travelers can slow down and experience daily life in a more authentic way.

For international visitors, Chengdu offers a welcoming and approachable side of China. It combines cultural depth with comfort, making it a favorite destination for both first-time and returning travelers.

Hangzhou: Culture, Calm, and Innovation

Hangzhou is widely admired for its natural beauty and elegant atmosphere, but it is also a leading center of China’s digital economy. The city is closely associated with e-commerce, cloud computing, fintech, and innovative startups, and it has built a strong reputation as one of the country’s most forward-looking tech hubs. This modern energy gives Hangzhou a distinctive character, where traditional scenery and high-tech industry exist side by side.

For overseas travelers, this adds another layer to the city’s appeal. Hangzhou is not only a place for tea culture, West Lake, and heritage sightseeing, but also a city that reflects China’s growing strength in technology and innovation.

Lijiang: Old Town Charm and Cultural Diversity

Lijiang offers a different kind of travel experience, centered on old-town charm, mountain scenery, and ethnic culture. Its historic town center, together with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the surrounding ethnic traditions, creates a destination that feels both scenic and culturally rich.

For travelers interested in heritage, local traditions, and slower-paced journeys, Lijiang is one of China’s most memorable stops. It is especially suitable for visitors who want a mix of history, nature, and authentic local atmosphere.

Jiuzhaigou: A Natural Wonder

Jiuzhaigou is known for its colorful lakes, waterfalls, forests, and changing seasonal scenery. It is one of China’s most celebrated natural attractions and a favorite among international visitors who value pristine landscapes and photography opportunities.

The beauty of Jiuzhaigou lies in its layered colors and peaceful environment. It offers travelers a chance to experience the natural richness of China in a way that feels both immersive and unforgettable.

Chongqing: Energetic, Distinctive, and Full of Character

Chongqing is one of China’s most distinctive cities, known for its mountain setting, dramatic city views, river landscapes, and famous hot pot. Its layered urban design and vibrant nighttime scenery make it a favorite among younger travelers and those looking for something different.

For overseas visitors who enjoy city experiences with personality, Chongqing offers a memorable combination of food, scenery, and local energy. It is a city that surprises many first-time travelers and adds a dynamic dimension to any China itinerary.

China Essence with Natural Wonders Exploration

May 05th, 2026, Couple

We traveled to China during 05th May to 17th May, 2026. Here goes our comment.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
