Starting May 27, 2026, U.S. PayPal users can make cashless payments throughout mainland China by scanning Weixin Pay QR codes directly from the PayPal app. This new integration connects PayPal World with Weixin Pay’s massive QR-code merchant network in China. It’s the largest private payment network tie-up on the planet and removes the biggest headache international travelers have faced in recent years: China’s cashless QR-payment system that was hard to use without a Chinese bank account or Weixin setup.
No new app is needed. Travelers use their existing PayPal app to scan Weixin Pay QR codes at merchants. No Chinese bank card or Weixin account is required. The service works at virtually every business that accepts Weixin Pay QR codes, including taxis, restaurants, hotels, retail stores, and attractions. Launched first for U.S. users, more international markets are expected to follow soon.
To encourage international adoption, Tencent is offering a 90-day waiver of the 3% foreign card transaction fee for first-time users who link an international bank card to Weixin Pay. This applies to daily spending up to RMB 1,000.
This payment breakthrough arrives alongside other major travel-friendly policies that make 2026 the most accessible year ever for inbound tourism to China. China has extended its 30-day visa-free entry policy for 54+ countries (including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, the UK, and Canada) until December 31, 2026. The 240-hour visa-free transit program is also available for 55 countries, allowing up to 10 days in designated areas for stopovers.
China is on track to become the world’s top tourism economy as foreign travelers increasingly choose China driven by improved payment convenience and visa policies. For PayPal users planning a trip to China, the experience is simple: you can pay using just your PayPal app, scan any Weixin Pay QR code at taxis, restaurants, hotels, and shops, and enjoy China’s cashless convenience without needing a Chinese bank account.
For international clients without PayPal, the good news is that you can link your Visa or Mastercard directly to Alipay or Weixin Pay. First-time users get the same 90-day fee waiver on transactions up to RMB 1,000 per day, and cash is accepted everywhere by law.
This PayPal-Weixin Pay integration removes the final major barrier preventing foreign travelers from enjoying China’s cashless convenience. Combined with visa-free policies and growing flight connectivity, 2026 is the most accessible year ever for inbound tourism to China. Whether you’re visiting Beijing’s historic sites, Guilin’s karst landscapes, Shanghai’s skyline, or the snow-capped mountains of Altay, you can now experience the same payment convenience that hundreds of millions of locals enjoy every day.
