China Autumn Travel Guide: 10 Best Places to See Fall Colors

Autumn is one of the best seasons to explore China, when mountains, forests, lakes, and villages are transformed into a stunning palette of gold, red, and orange. From the fairy-tale landscapes of Kanas and Jiuzhaigou to the majestic mountains of Huangshan and Tibet, China offers countless breathtaking destinations to experience fall colors. This guide introduces the 10 best places to see autumn scenery in China, along with the best visiting times and travel tips to help you plan an unforgettable fall journey.

1. Kanas (Buerjin, Xinjiang)

Kanas is like a dazzling jewel in the Altai region of Xinjiang, nestled deep within the valleys of the Altai Mountains. Home to China’s deepest moraine-dammed lake, Kanas Lake sits at an altitude of approximately 1,374 meters, with a maximum depth of 188.5 meters. Its crystal-clear waters resemble a living gemstone, transforming with the changing seasons and weather—shifting between enchanting shades of emerald green, deep sapphire blue, and shimmering silver. It is not only China’s only major lake that flows into the Arctic Ocean, but also a place surrounded by the mysterious legend of the “lake monster,” adding an air of intrigue to this peaceful alpine landscape.

Autumn in Kanas is a masterpiece painted by nature with its most vibrant colors. Golden birch forests intertwine with fiery red maple leaves, dressing the mountains in a breathtaking tapestry of hues. Climbing the 1,068 steps to the Guan Yu Tai (Viewing Fish Pavilion) rewards visitors with a panoramic view of the entire lake area, where mountains and waters blend harmoniously like a scene from a dreamlike wonderland. Along the lakeshore, the tranquil villages of the Tuvan people, with wooden cabins, felt yurts, and curling smoke rising from chimneys, resemble a fairy-tale world—peaceful and enchanting.

Travel Tips:

The best time to enjoy Kanas’ autumn scenery is from mid-September to mid-October. Visitors can first travel to Buerjin County and then continue to Kanas Scenic Area. A variety of accommodations are available within the scenic area, including hotels, guesthouses, and boutique inns, and advance booking is highly recommended. During your visit, you can explore the area by hiking, taking shuttle buses, or riding horses—each offering a unique way to experience the breathtaking landscapes.

2. Jiuzhaigou Valley (Aba Prefecture, Sichuan)

Jiuzhaigou Valley is a place seemingly blessed by nature. In autumn, it transforms into a breathtaking masterpiece of vibrant colors, resembling a magnificent oil painting created by nature itself. The crystal-clear lakes reveal their colorful depths, and under the sunlight, the shimmering waters reflect a mesmerizing glow—as if nature had overturned a palette and scattered countless hues across the landscape.

Autumn brings out the most spectacular beauty of Jiuzhaigou’s colorful forests. The mountainsides are covered with trees painted by the autumn frost in shades of red, yellow, orange, and green, creating a stunning layered landscape that looks like a scene from a poem or painting. Viewed from afar, the forests resemble a vast sea of colors, beautifully complemented by the deep blue sky and pure white clouds, forming an unforgettable autumn panorama.

Travel Tips:

The best time to enjoy Jiuzhaigou’s autumn scenery is from late September to early November. Visitors can first travel to Jiuzhaigou County before heading to the scenic area. Overnight stays are not permitted inside the scenic area, but a variety of hotels and guesthouses are available near the entrance. During your visit, sightseeing buses are required for transportation within the park. Please follow the designated routes and avoid leaving the boardwalks or entering restricted areas.

3. Zhangjiajie (Hunan)

Tianzi Mountain and Yuanjiajie are among the best places to admire Zhangjiajie’s spectacular sandstone peak forests from above. On crisp autumn days, thousands of extraordinary peaks stretch as far as the eye can see, with the vibrant colors of red, yellow, and green foliage creating a striking contrast against the gray-white stone pillars.

Along the banks of Golden Whip Stream, autumn leaves are reflected in the clear water, while fallen leaves drift gently across the surface like tiny boats floating with the current. The towering cliff walls of Yangjiajie resemble a natural Great Wall, glowing with a unique brilliance under the autumn sunlight. Take a cable car up Tianmen Mountain and enjoy panoramic views of the colorful forest below. The autumn sunlight streaming through Tianmen Cave adds a dramatic finishing touch to this breathtaking landscape. Baofeng Lake, with its crystal-clear waters, looks like a jade jewel nestled among the mountains, shimmering under the golden autumn sun.

Travel Tips:

The period from September to November is ideal for visiting Zhangjiajie, when the weather is cool, the skies are clear, and visibility is excellent. Temperatures generally range between 15°C and 25°C. Around October 20 to November 15, the autumn colors reach their peak: ginkgo trees at lower elevations turn golden first, mid-altitude trees such as Chinese tallow and smoke trees transform into shades of red and gold, while the pine forests on higher peaks remain lush and green. It is recommended to avoid the first and last three days of the National Day holiday, as visitor numbers are lower and the overall experience is more enjoyable in mid-to-late October.

4. Huangshan Mountain (Anhui)

Autumn in Huangshan is a breathtaking masterpiece that stretches from the mountain peaks above the clouds to the rugged rocks along the ridgelines, from dense forests covering the slopes to tranquil valleys hidden among the mountains. Looking out across this magnificent landscape, it is hard to tell whether the scene before you is the real world or a painting created by nature itself. Shades of pale yellow, golden yellow, crimson, russet, and deep brown-red gradually spread across the autumn foliage, shimmering among the evergreen pine forests.

As one of the “Five Wonders of Huangshan,” the sea of clouds is one of the most sought-after experiences for visitors to the mountain. In autumn, the occasional arrival of cold air creates ideal conditions for Huangshan’s unique mountain climate, allowing the sea of clouds to appear almost magically before your eyes. In an instant, visitors may find themselves immersed in a world above the clouds. The sky at this elevation appears exceptionally clear and endless, while the moments spent among the clouds become unforgettable memories filled with romance and wonder.

A visit to Huangshan in autumn would not be complete without exploring Xihai Grand Canyon. With its dramatic elevation changes and deep valleys, the canyon displays layers of autumn colors in exquisite gradients, creating a landscape of extraordinary beauty. Walking through the canyon feels like stepping into a living painting that constantly changes with every step. Beyond hiking, the best way to appreciate the canyon scenery is to take the famous Xihai Canyon sightseeing train. As the train glides through the mountains, visitors can enjoy a spectacular encounter with Huangshan’s autumn colors and experience a visual feast unlike any other.

Travel Tips:

The best time to experience the autumn scenery of Huangshan is from late September to early November, with the most vibrant foliage colors usually appearing from mid-October to early November. Visitors can reach Huangshan City first and then continue to the scenic area. As temperatures vary significantly between the foot of the mountain and the summit, it is recommended to bring warm clothing even during autumn.

5. Jinshanling–Simatai Great Wall (Hebei & Beijing)

The Jinshanling–Simatai section of the Great Wall is considered one of the finest and most scenic sections of China’s iconic Great Wall. In autumn, the ancient walls become even more magnificent, set against a backdrop of vibrant red foliage. Standing atop the Great Wall and looking into the distance, visitors can admire rolling mountains covered with layers of colorful forests. The fiery red autumn leaves spread across the hills like flames, blending beautifully with the ancient fortifications to create a breathtaking landscape where history and nature come together.

Here, visitors can experience both the grandeur and rugged beauty of the Great Wall while enjoying the brilliant colors of autumn. Walking along the centuries-old walls and touching the weathered bricks, one can almost hear echoes of history and feel the passage of time preserved within this remarkable landscape.

Travel Tips:

The best time to enjoy the autumn scenery is from late September to early November. The scenic area can be reached from Beijing or Chengde. Visitors can choose to take a cable car for a more relaxed experience or hike along the Great Wall to fully appreciate its dramatic landscapes. Accommodation options are available at hotels and guesthouses near the scenic area, and advance reservations are recommended during the peak autumn season.

6. Qiandao Lake (Zhejiang)

Autumn in Qiandao Lake is a season of perfect harmony—the mountains are serene, the waters are gentle, and the islands are painted in vibrant hues. Everything feels just right. Under the golden autumn sunlight, the lake and mountains unfold into a breathtaking landscape painting. Along the way, colorful maple leaves fill the scenery, while the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains are reflected clearly on the calm lake surface, resembling a traditional Chinese ink painting. Strolling along the lakeside, visitors can feel refreshed and relaxed, as if they have stepped into a mysterious fairyland.

Taking a boat cruise across Qiandao Lake is one of the best ways to experience its stunning scenery. With a gentle breeze brushing your face and crystal-clear waters stretching into the distance, countless islands appear across the lake like emerald jewels scattered upon the water. Bathed in the warm autumn sunshine, you can close your eyes, feel the gentle rhythm of the lake, and breathe in the fresh air of nature. The peaceful and soothing atmosphere offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Travel Tips:

The best time to enjoy the autumn scenery of Qiandao Lake is from October to November, when the weather is pleasant and the mountains are decorated with colorful foliage. Visitors can first reach Hangzhou or Chun’an County and then travel to Qiandao Lake Scenic Area. A boat cruise is highly recommended, as it allows visitors to fully appreciate the lake’s islands, clear waters, and surrounding mountains. For a closer connection with nature, travelers can also explore the scenic area by cycling, hiking, or walking along the lakeside trails. A variety of accommodations are available around Qiandao Lake, including lakeside resorts, boutique hotels, and guesthouses. Staying overnight is recommended to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere, especially during sunrise and sunset.

7. Shangri-La (Yunnan)

“Remember the finest moments of the year—the season when oranges turn golden and tangerines ripen.” What does the most beautiful autumn look like? Perhaps you can find the answer in Shangri-La. Here, autumn flows through every corner of the land, painting the plateau with breathtaking colors.

Pudacuo National Park is a place where nature reveals its purest beauty. The name “Pudacuo” comes from Tibetan and means “a lake that carries all beings across to the other shore.” Here, streams flow gently through ancient forests, where intertwined roots and centuries-old trees create an atmosphere of mystery. Vast alpine lakes and meadows stretch across the plateau, while emerald waters ripple softly in the breeze. In autumn, Pudacuo takes on a magnificent new look, with its two lakes and one pasture sharing the brilliance of the season. Like a fairy-tale world untouched by pollution, the area boasts exceptionally clear water and pristine air.

Meili Snow Mountain offers one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles—the “Golden Sunrise on the Snow Mountains.” This rare phenomenon appears only around 40 days a year, and the chances of witnessing it increase significantly in autumn.

According to local belief, those fortunate enough to see this magnificent sight will enjoy good luck throughout the year. As the first rays of sunlight illuminate the snow-covered peaks, the mountains glow with a warm and dazzling radiance. Beneath a crystal-clear blue sky tinged with soft purple morning hues, the sunlight gradually transforms the mountain peaks from pink to orange-red and finally into brilliant gold, revealing their most stunning appearance.

If Meili Snow Mountain represents a sacred beauty that inspires awe, then Napahai Lake possesses a gentler beauty with a spirit of its own. Whether as a vast alpine meadow or a highland wetland lake, it is breathtaking simply through its own existence. Snow-capped mountains are reflected in the tranquil waters, while bright sunlight spreads across the grasslands. Herds of cattle and sheep roam freely across the endless green fields, and the gentle wind carries a sense of freedom and serenity. Everything feels like stepping into a dreamlike paradise.

Xiaozhongdian is a charming town along the route from Lijiang to Shangri-La. Located on a high-altitude plateau, it is home to vast and flourishing grasslands. When autumn arrives, the area becomes a spectacular sea of Langdu flowers (Stellera chamaejasme), with clusters of vibrant red blossoms covering the land. Alongside countless unnamed wildflowers and grasses, they weave together to create a magnificent natural flower paradise.

Travel Tips:

The best time to experience Shangri-La’s autumn scenery is from September to October, when the forests, grasslands, and snow mountains display their most captivating colors. Visitors can usually reach Shangri-La via Diqing Shangri-La Airport or travel overland from Lijiang. Due to the high altitude (around 3,200 meters above sea level), travelers are advised to allow time for acclimatization, stay hydrated, and prepare warm clothing, as temperatures can vary greatly between day and night. Autumn mornings often offer the best chance to witness the Golden Sunrise on Meili Snow Mountain, so checking local weather conditions in advance is recommended.

8. Red Leaf Valley (Changbai Mountain, Jilin)

Red Leaf Valley, located in a valley within Laoyeling Mountain, a branch of the Changbai Mountain Range, is one of the most spectacular autumn destinations in the region. Its high latitude and long frost season create ideal conditions for vibrant autumn foliage. With a rich diversity of tree species, including broadleaf forests, coniferous forests, and mixed forests, the valley transforms under the touch of autumn frost into a magnificent palette of fiery red, orange, and golden hues. The colorful forests intertwine across the mountains, resembling a breathtaking oil painting crafted by nature itself.

The best time to admire the autumn foliage is from around September 20 to October 20 each year. During this period, the hillsides are covered with brilliant red leaves that glow like flames, beautifully complemented by white clouds and clear blue skies. Strolling along the mountain paths, visitors can walk through carpets of fallen leaves that rustle softly beneath their feet, creating a natural melody that captures the essence of autumn.

Travel Tips:

The ideal viewing period is from late September to mid-October. Visitors can first travel to Jilin City and then continue by local transportation to Red Leaf Valley. Several farmhouses and guesthouses around the valley provide accommodation and dining services. The scenic area features multiple viewing platforms, allowing visitors to appreciate the spectacular autumn foliage from different perspectives.

9. Yading (Daocheng, Sichuan)

Daocheng Yading, often described as “the last pure land on the blue planet,” becomes even more breathtaking in autumn. The region is home to three sacred snow-capped mountains—Chenrezig (Xiannairi), Jambeyang (Yangmaiyong), and Chanadrje (Xianuoduoji). Bathed in the golden autumn sunlight, their snow-covered peaks glow with a pure and holy radiance, as if they are divine guardians protecting this pristine land.

The mountain forests are transformed by autumn into a spectacular tapestry of colors, beautifully contrasting with the snow-capped mountains in the distance and the alpine meadows nearby. Together, they create a landscape that looks like a scene from a poem or painting. High-altitude lakes such as Pearl Lake and Milk Lake become especially enchanting in autumn, with their crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding snow peaks and colorful forests, creating a dreamlike fairy-tale scene.

Travel Tips:

The best time to experience Yading’s autumn scenery is from late September to late October. Visitors can first travel to Daocheng County and then continue to the Yading Scenic Area. Accommodation options include Yading Village inside the scenic area or Shangri-La Town outside the area. Exploring Yading requires hiking or horseback riding, so visitors should take precautions against altitude sickness, plan their itinerary carefully, and allow sufficient time for rest and acclimatization.

10. Mount Namcha Barwa (Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon, Tibet)

Mount Namcha Barwa, known as the “Shy Maiden Peak,” is a sacred mountain often veiled in clouds and mist, much like a shy maiden reluctant to reveal her true beauty. Rising to an elevation of 7,782 meters beside the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon, the mountain creates a breathtaking visual contrast with the canyon’s dramatic depth and grandeur.

In autumn, the scenery around Mount Namcha Barwa becomes even more captivating. Beneath the deep blue sky, the snow-covered peak glows brilliantly in the sunlight, while the surrounding mountains are transformed into golden landscapes by the autumn frost. The golden slopes contrast beautifully with the lush forests deep within the canyon, creating a magnificent autumn panorama. Meanwhile, the mighty Yarlung Zangbo River rushes through the canyon, adding a sense of movement and vitality to this grand natural masterpiece.

Travel Tips:

The best time to admire Mount Namcha Barwa is from September to November. Visitors can first travel to Nyingchi City and then continue to the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon Scenic Area. The area offers several viewing platforms for observing the mountain, with Suosong Village being one of the best locations for sightseeing and photography. Accommodation options include guesthouses and hotels within the scenic area, or visitors can choose to stay in nearby Bayi Town.
