Otaru is a port city that served as the commercial and trade center of Hokkaido during the Meiji and Taisho periods (1868-1926). Many solemn stone buildings still exist, such as banks, trading companies built at that time and forming a romantic urban landscape around the Otaru Canal. Some of these historical buildings have been transformed into hotels, restaurants and shops. Otaru is famous for its fresh seafood and abundant hot springs.

The Site of Temiya Line  In 1880, the Horonai Railway connecting Sapporo and Handomiya was opened, becoming the earliest railway in Hokkaido. Afterwards, the section between Handomiya and JR Minami Otaru Station was called the Handomiya Line, which was discontinued in 1985. The railway and pedestrian crossings have preserved their original appearance. While strolling the site, there is a sense of time traveling back. During the Snow Lantern Festival held every February, snow candles are lit up, creating a dreamy atmosphere.

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
