When traveling to Japan, in addition to admiring the beautiful cherry blossoms and experiencing the unique culture, what many people look forward to most is finding some unique Japanese treasures.

1. Omamori

In Japan, omamori are charms that symbolize wishes. Originally used for warding off evil and dispelling misfortune, they have evolved to cover aspects such as traffic safety, safe childbirth, good fortune, academic success, and health. Historically, Shinto priests would write the name of a deity on wooden tablets or paper slips, place them in small cloth bags, and sell them to worshippers. Omamori were seen as a bridge to communicate with the gods.

Today, omamori sold at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples are believed to bring good fortune, and protection, and remove misfortune, though interpretations can vary due to different religious perspectives.

Omamori from Shinto shrines are blessed through Shinto rituals and are considered to contain divine power, while omamori from temples are given through rituals such as reading sutras and burning incense, making them considered gifts of prayer.

2. Daruma Doll

The Daruma doll features eyebrows designed to resemble a crane, symbolizing “good fortune”. The cheeks are adorned with elements of a turtle, representing “longevity”, and the mustache is modeled after a cedar tree, symbolizing safety and peace.

The Daruma doll’s crane-like eyebrows and turtle-like features are traditional symbols of good luck in Japan, which is why these dolls are often used for making wishes and seeking blessings.

3. Wagashi

Wagashi are traditional Japanese sweets with a history spanning several centuries. In Tokyo, many wagashi shops preserve ancient techniques, and each wagashi is crafted with the precision of an art form. The production of wagashi varies with the seasons. For example, spring wagashi often feature cherry blossoms, summer sweets emphasize refreshing themes, autumn treats are inspired by red leaves and chestnuts, and winter wagashi may take the shape of snowflakes and plum blossoms.

4. Japanese-Style Stationery

When it comes to Japanese specialties, how can we not mention the charming Japanese-style stationery and stickers? These adorable items are not only beautifully designed but also highly practical. Whether you’re a planner enthusiast or a stationery lover, you’ll be captivated by them.

Japanese stationery design combines traditional elements with modern creativity. Stickers featuring iconic Japanese patterns like Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms, or notebooks designed with kimono-inspired textures, are irresistible to many.

5. Anime and Game Merchandise

If you’re an anime fan or a gaming enthusiast, Japanese anime and game merchandise is a must-have.

As a powerhouse in the anime and gaming world, Japan offers high-quality and diverse merchandise. From classic series like “Dragon Ball” and “One Piece” to recent hits, you’ll find plenty of collectibles to suit your tastes. Whether it’s detailed figurines or limited-edition posters, these items are beloved by fans.

6. Japanese Sake and Tea Sets

Tea drinking and sake consumption are integral parts of Japanese culture, making exquisite Japanese sake and tea sets perfect souvenirs.

These items not only showcase exceptional craftsmanship but also carry rich cultural significance. Using them to enjoy tea or sake feels like connecting with the past, offering a sense of tranquility and elegance.

7. Sake

Also known as Japanese rice wine, sake comes in a variety of flavors and alcohol concentrations, and can be enjoyed hot, cold, or at room temperature.

In Japan, you can find sake everywhere. It’s a popular alcoholic beverage served in bars and high-end restaurants alike. Most places that offer alcoholic drinks will have some basic sake options.

If you want to buy sake to take home, you can find mainstream brands at local convenience stores and supermarkets. For a more extensive selection, visit specialty liquor stores, department stores, or dedicated sake shops.

8. Japanese Beauty Products

Japanese beauty products are a top choice for female travelers due to their outstanding quality and affordable prices, earning a stellar reputation worldwide.

Japan places great emphasis on the development of cosmetics and skincare, focusing on natural ingredients and free from additives. These products often prioritize hydration, anti-aging, and whitening effects.

Well-known brands like Shiseido and Kose have dedicated sales channels in Japan, offering lower prices and frequent discounts.

A wide variety of beauty products can be easily found in drugstores across every town.

9. Digital Products

Japanese digital products are renowned worldwide, including brands like Panasonic, Sony gaming consoles, Canon cameras, and HP televisions. These products often feature advanced technology and excellent performance, and are usually more affordable in Japan compared to other countries.

Additionally, Japan offers unique digital items such as portable gaming consoles and smartwatches, which are particularly popular among international visitors.

10. Japanese Handicrafts

If you enjoy collecting or appreciating traditional crafts, Japanese lacquerware and Japanese Washi paper are definitely worth exploring.

These handicrafts embody deep cultural significance and the spirit of craftsmanship. Each piece represents the culmination of artisans’ hard work and skill, with intricate designs in lacquerware and delicate textures in Japanese Washi paper that are truly breathtaking.

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
