Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru, the capital of Malaysia’s Johor state, is the country’s second-largest city. Located at the southernmost tip of Malaysia, it is separated from Singapore by just a small body of water and is often referred to as the “Gateway to Southern Malaysia”.

In this vibrant city, you’ll find historic landmarks like the Johor Sultanate Palace, the whimsical LEGOLAND, and high-end shopping malls for a fulfilling retail experience.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy the conveniences of a modern city, experience a laid-back lifestyle full of local charm, or cross the Johor Strait to visit Singapore, Johor Bahru will always captivate you with its affordability and unique appeal.

  1. Weather
Johor Bahru has a tropical rainforest climate, remaining warm and humid throughout the year with an average temperature between 24-32°C. There are no distinct seasonal changes.

The city experiences high rainfall and overall humidity. It’s recommended to carry an umbrella, protect yourself from the sun, and stay hydrated when traveling around Johor Bahru.

  1. Popular Attractions
Legoland Malaysia: The first Legoland theme park in Asia, this is a comprehensive amusement park that includes a theme park, water park, hotel, and marine exploration center. Every attraction, display, show, and movie immerses visitors in the colorful world of Lego.

Johor Bahru Zoo: Opened in 1928, Johor Bahru Zoo has a history of nearly a century. The zoo houses over fifty species of animals, totaling more than a hundred creatures, including the Malayan Tapir, the national animal of Malaysia, which is believed to be a good luck symbol that can “eat” nightmares.

  1. Shopping
Mid Valley Southkey: It is a large shopping mall featuring both international and local brands. Besides shopping, the mall also offers dining options, a cinema, and other amenities for a complete experience.

Paradigm Mall: It is a large shopping center with over 500 retail stores and restaurants. It also features an ice-skating rink and an indoor archery range for visitors to enjoy.

Eco Galleria: It is a commercial street with British-style architecture, designed with natural lighting and an open central plaza, offering a European-style shopping experience.

Johor Premium Outlets: It is a discount paradise for luxury goods, featuring well-known brands like BOSS, Coach, Jimmy Choo, and Bottega Veneta, with discounts ranging from 30% to 70% all year round, and additional weekend deals.

Pasar Karat: It is a popular open-air night market for locals in Johor, where you can find second-hand antiques, traditional Malay clothing, and handmade woven bags.

KSL City Mall: It is an affordable shopping center with many lifestyle stores, offering a variety of snacks and budget-friendly skincare products.

  1. Food
Taman Ungku Tun Aminah Night Market: It is the largest night market in Johor, known for its bustling crowds and busy traffic. Here, you can find a wide variety of lauk (side dishes) for dinner, along with freshly grilled satay, colorful Nyonya cakes, egg tarts, and more.

Taman Larkin: A great spot to try traditional Malay dishes, this night market gets busier after 8 PM, so it’s best to arrive a bit earlier to avoid the crowds.

  1. Transportation Guide
Taxi: You can use ride-hailing apps for easy taxi rides, with payment options available through cash or credit card.

Car Rental: Renting a car is a convenient option if you plan to explore attractions farther away.

Public Buses: The main shopping areas are well-served by buses, though the frequency of buses is relatively low.

Cross-border Transport: Since Johor is very close to Singapore, you can take trains or buses that travel between the two cities, making it easy to visit Singapore from Johor.

  1. Accommodation Recommendations
City Center Area: Located near JB Sentral, this area offers convenient transportation and is close to several shopping malls and dining districts.

Puteri Harbour Area: Situated by the sea, this area features a scenic waterfront promenade and is quieter compared to the city center, making it a great option for a more relaxed stay.

Wong Ah Fook Street Area: Known as the busiest main road in Johor Bahru, this area provides easy access to various attractions. It is lined with large shopping malls, various venues, and food stalls, with a lively night market in the evening, making shopping and dining very convenient.

Legoland Resort Area: Located next to the Legoland Malaysia Resort, this hotel offers a unique experience with rooms designed like Lego castles. It’s perfect for families and Lego enthusiasts, with rooms stocked with Legos and even a mysterious treasure chest that requires a code to open.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. I have traveled al over the world and they are definitively on the top service of the agencies I had used.

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
