Penang Hill is located in the northern part of Penang, Malaysia. It got its name from the practice of using flag signals to transmit important messages between the top and bottom of the hill in ancient times. It is a great spot to overlook Penang and is a popular retreat for both tourists and locals, especially during the hot summer months.
If you enjoy exercise and adventure, hiking up Penang Hill would be a great choice. The entire hike takes about 4 hours. Walking along the trail surrounded by towering ancient trees, you will be immersed in lush greenery and enjoy breathtaking views along the way.
You will walk into the Habitat Ecopark, located in a 130-million-year-old tropical rainforest, immersing yourself in nature. Here, you can encounter the park’s diverse animal residents, such as the giant squirrel, dusky leaf monkey, and the Malay giant squirrel, as well as a variety of tropical plants to admire.
In addition to hiking, you can also take the cable car up the hill. In just five minutes, you can travel from the foot of the hill to the summit, which is over 800 meters high – an experience you must try when visiting Penang Hill. The cable car track was built in the last century and has a history of over 100 years. The total length of the track is about 2 kilometers. The cable cars have undergone three upgrades over time. The current large sightseeing cable cars provide a more comfortable ride and better views compared to the previous fully wooden cars.
The cable car travels along a narrow track between the two mountain slopes, offering distinct views when going up and coming down. On the way up, it feels like embarking on an adventure, heading into the deep, mysterious heart of the forest. On the descent, the trees part, revealing glimpses of the clear blue sky and a corner of the city. In the steeper sections, the view suddenly opens up, resembling a bird soaring out of the jungle, where the forest, city, and blue sky come together to form a breathtakingly beautiful picture.
Upon reaching the top of Penang Hill, be sure to walk along the Forest Canopy Walk and the Sky Walk. The suspension bridge, which is 40 meters above the forest floor, stretches across three ridges and valleys, bringing you closer to the very top layer of the forest. The 360° walkway offers unobstructed views, allowing you to enjoy the stunning scenery of Penang from every angle.
