Amid the vast grasslands, rolling mountains, and desolate deserts of Mongolia lies the “Blue Pearl of the East” — Lake Khövsgöl.
This is Mongolia’s largest freshwater lake, its waters a deep, crystal blue. Together with the vast, pristine sky and the distant mountains faintly veiled in mist, it forms an endless, breathtaking panorama. Blessed with an ideal habitat, the area teems with countless species of plants and animals, adding a vibrant touch of life to the lake’s serene beauty.
But the most extraordinary time for Lake Khövsgöl is undoubtedly in winter. On a silent night, the frigid temperatures freeze the lake’s waters. When the sun rises the next morning, the entire lake region is blanketed in white, transformed into a scene utterly unlike its usual appearance.
Every March, as people emerge from the long winter and the season reaches its final days, they hold the “Blue Pearl” Ice Festival on the shores of Lake Khövsgöl before the ice melts. The event serves both to bid farewell to winter and to express deep respect for nature, adding even more color and vitality to the lake at this time of year.
People from all over Mongolia come to the Lake Khövsgöl area to take part in the Ice Festival, where a variety of activities sweep away the lingering chill of winter.
The Ice Festival features cultural performances, traditional folk music concerts, showcases of ethnic delicacies, laser shows, sailing demonstrations, and more. Visitors can also take part in a variety of traditional sports on ice, including archery, tug-of-war, skating, horse racing, and sledding. There is always something that allows everyone to effortlessly immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere.
Join the Ice Festival amid the picturesque lakeside scenery and fully experience the enchanting winter charm of Mongolia’s Lake Khövsgöl region.
