Located in Erdene County, about 50 kilometers east of Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar, stands a towering equestrian statue of Genghis Khan. The statue reaches a total height of 40 meters and is made from 250 tons of stainless steel. Built to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the founding of Mongolia, it is currently the largest statue of Genghis Khan in the world. Today, it has become a nationally cherished cultural landmark and a popular tourist destination that fills Mongolians with pride.
From a distance, Genghis Khan sits upright on his horse, gazing into the distance. Bathed in sunlight, his entire figure gleams with a dazzling silver hue, symbolizing his ambition and strength in expanding his empire.
At the base of the statue is a two-story circular pedestal, supported on the outside by 36 individual columns, symbolizing the 36 great khans in Mongolian history. As you approach, you’ll also see sculptures of the nine generals who served under Genghis Khan at the entrance.
This two-story circular base is far more than just a simple foundation—it holds hidden wonders within. Inside, there is an exhibition space showcasing traditional Mongolian clothing and artifacts related to Genghis Khan, offering a deeper understanding of this national hero of the Mongolian people. There’s also a Mongolian restaurant where visitors can enjoy authentic Mongolian cuisine.
The surprises this statue offers go far beyond its impressive appearance. Inside the statue, there’s an elevator that takes visitors from the base up to the horse’s back, allowing for a close-up encounter with Genghis Khan himself. From there, a staircase leads to a viewing platform on the horse’s head, where you can take in the sweeping views of the vast surrounding grasslands. Standing there, you might feel as if you’re galloping across the steppe on horseback, transported back to an era of epic conquests and boundless ambition—living out the dream of being a true ruler of the grasslands.
Standing high above the horse’s head, the smoke of war gradually dissipates, leaving only this towering statue quietly overlooking the vast grassland.
The Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue is part of the planned Genghis Khan Theme Cultural Park. In the future, the park will feature multiple sections, including a museum dedicated to Genghis Khan’s Kheshig (imperial guard), making it a highly anticipated destination.
