In 2012, Mongolia designated the first day of the lunar month of Tsagaan Sar (the cold month) each year as the birthday of the Great Khan Genghis Khan, and declared it “National Pride Day” to mark the occasion.
Every year on the National Pride Day, Mongolia holds a grand celebration in Sükhbaatar Square in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.
At the start of the celebration, a solemn flag-raising ceremony is held, followed by a clockwise procession to honor the Nine White Banners. Originally established by Genghis Khan, the Nine White Banners have become a symbol of state authority in Mongolia.
During the ceremony to welcome the White Banners, the Mongolian Honor Guard and the State Special Security Unit escort the banners, while the Armed Forces Military Band performs ceremonial music as a mark of respect.
After the Nine White Banners are lined up and a tribute is paid at the statue of Genghis Khan, the nation’s highest honor—the “Genghis Khan” Medal—is awarded. This ceremony recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to strengthening national sovereignty, independence, and unity; advancing the study of the country’s politics and historical traditions; preserving cultural heritage; promoting Mongolia abroad; and serving the nation and its people.
