Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, is the country’s political, economic, cultural, and transportation center. Nestled on the banks of the majestic Tuul River and gently embraced by rolling mountains, it serves as an ideal starting point for exploring Mongolia’s vast grasslands and profound history.

Ulaanbaatar is a fascinating fusion of tradition and modernity, of nomadic spirit and urban rhythm. Bring your curiosity and set out to discover this expansive land.

1.Weather

Ulaanbaatar experiences distinct seasons with significant temperature differences both throughout the year and between day and night, so it’s important to be prepared for changing conditions.

During summer (July to August), Ulaanbaatar enjoys plenty of sunshine and relatively high temperatures, averaging around 20°C. It’s the ideal time to explore the city and venture out to the grasslands. However, the UV index can be strong during the day, and windy conditions may bring dust, so consider bringing sunglasses, sunscreen, and a face mask. Occasional brief thunderstorms may occur, so rain gear is also recommended. As temperatures drop sharply at night, a light jacket will come in handy.

From November to February, winter in Ulaanbaatar is long and bitterly cold, with temperatures dropping to around -20°C and occasionally plummeting to as low as -40°C in extreme cases.

In spring (May to June), temperatures gradually begin to rise. Autumn (September to October) brings unpredictable weather, and occasional snowfall may occur.

2.Popular Attractions

Genghis Khan Square / Sukhbaatar Square: It is the central square of Ulaanbaatar and the political and historical heart of the city. At the center stands the equestrian statue of Sukhbaatar, surrounded by landmark buildings such as the Government Palace, the National Museum of Mongolia, and the Genghis Khan National Museum. It symbolizes the fusion of Mongolia’s modernity and history — a perfect spot for photos and experiencing the city’s atmosphere.

Gandan Monastery: As the largest and most important Tibetan Buddhist temple in Mongolia, Gandan Monastery has witnessed the rise, fall, and revival of Buddhism in the country. Inside the temple stands a towering 26.5-meter statue of Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) made of copper. Step into the monastery at dawn, and find peace of mind amid the serene sounds of devoted chanting.

National Museum of Mongolia: The earliest established and most richly curated museum in Mongolia, it showcases the nation’s history from the Stone Age to the modern era. Exhibits include artifacts from the time of Genghis Khan, traditional costumes, and items representing nomadic culture. It is an excellent place to gain a deep understanding of Mongolia’s grand and dynamic history.

Bogd Khaan Palace Museum: Once the residence and political-religious center of the 8th Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, the last Khaan of Mongolia, this historic site has now been transformed into a museum. The architecture reflects a blend of Mongolian, Tibetan, Han Chinese, and other ethnic styles. Inside, it houses a collection of rare artifacts, including gold-threaded boots and a yurt covered with leopard skin, offering a glimpse into the royal history and culture of Mongolia.

Terelj National Park: A natural paradise just over an hour’s drive from the city, Terelj National Park is renowned for its stunning mountains, unique rock formations, and abundant wildlife. Here, visitors can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and camping, offering an authentic experience of life on the Mongolian steppe.

Zaisan Memorial: Famous for its breathtaking sunset views, the Zaisan Memorial sits atop a hill overlooking Ulaanbaatar. It offers a panoramic view of the entire city, making it a perfect spot to admire the skyline and capture stunning sunset photos.

3.Shopping

Naran Tuul Market: The largest traditional wholesale market in Ulaanbaatar, Naran Tuul Market is full of local life and energy. It offers a wide variety of goods, from clothing and accessories to household items, often at more affordable prices — a great place for bargain hunting and experiencing everyday Mongolian culture.

State Department Store: It is the oldest department store in Ulaanbaatar, with a history spanning nearly a century. Despite its long legacy, the interior is modern and offers a wide range of products, including jewelry, cosmetics, clothing, electronics, and traditional Mongolian crafts. The entire sixth floor is dedicated to Mongolian souvenirs, making it an ideal spot for picking up gifts and keepsakes.

GOBI Cashmere Factory Flagship Store: It is a well-known Mongolian cashmere brand offering affordable prices. Their products are made from 100% cashmere, ranging from small items like gloves, socks, hats, and scarves to larger pieces such as sweaters, dresses, thermal pants, and even full cashmere suits and coats.

4.Transportation Guide

Taxis: Most taxis on the streets of Ulaanbaatar are privately owned cars. You can hail one by waving on the street, but it’s important to agree on the fare in advance to avoid any disputes. Using online ride-hailing apps is recommended for a more convenient and reliable experience.

Public Buses: It is an inexpensive way to get around, with routes covering most of the main urban areas. However, the system is very complex, and without language proficiency, it may be difficult to reach your destination smoothly.

Walking / Shared E-scooters: Traffic in Ulaanbaatar can be congested, and many attractions in the city center are relatively close to each other. Walking or using shared e-scooters is often a more convenient way to explore these sites.

5.Accommodation Recommendations

City Center Area: Staying in the city center offers easy access to many of Ulaanbaatar’s main attractions, with convenient transportation and a wide range of nearby restaurants and shopping options — perfect for experiencing the urban vibe. The area features a variety of accommodations, from luxury and mid-range hotels to budget-friendly options, catering to all types of travelers.

Near Terelj National Park: The park area features ger (yurt) resorts that offer modernized Mongolian-style accommodations, with some equipped with bathrooms and hot water. Visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities such as horseback riding and archery, as well as admire the park’s unique geological formations. This area is ideal for those who wish to connect with nature and experience the grassland scenery and traditional yurt lifestyle.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. I have traveled al over the world and they are definitively on the top service of the agencies I had used.

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
