Zaisan Memorial

Zaisan Memorial2

In the southern suburbs of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, lies Zaisan Hill on the south bank of the Tuul River. Atop the hill stands a tall, uniquely shaped monument — the Zaisan Memorial. Built in 1971 by the then Soviet government, it was erected to commemorate the Soviet and Mongolian heroes who sacrificed their lives during World War II.

The main structure of the Zaisan Memorial is a suspended circular wall. The inner side of the wall is decorated with colorful ceramic tiles, forming vivid mosaic scenes centered on the theme of friendship between the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. These mosaics depict key historical moments such as the Soviet support for Mongolia’s independence in 1921, the defeat of the Japanese Kwantung Army by the Soviet Red Army on Mongolia’s border in 1939, and milestones in Soviet space exploration. The outer side of the wall features a ring of stone carvings, backed with various images illustrating the close ties between the Soviet Union and Mongolia.

When standing at the center of the circular wall and looking upward, the suspended lower section reveals the blue sky and white clouds of Ulaanbaatar. With nature as the backdrop, a beautiful landscape painting is born — where history and the present meet and extend into the future.

Directly in front of the circular wall stands a stone statue of a Soviet Red Army soldier holding a raised flag. The soldier is dressed in a Soviet Red Army uniform, with a resolute expression and eyes firmly fixed on the distance.

At the very center of the monument is an eternal flame ignition base, modeled after the Soviet-style eternal flame, though it was later extinguished by human intervention.

In addition to appreciating the architectural design and reflecting on traces of history, the Zaisan Memorial is also an excellent spot for panoramic views of Ulaanbaatar.

Ulaanbaatar is located in the valley of the Tuul River, surrounded by mountains, with the city stretching along the direction of the river valley. Due to urban development, the city center is filled with high-rise buildings, while the surrounding areas feature charming courtyards composed of modern European-style wooden houses and traditional Mongolian gers. The colorful houses add a vibrant touch to the entire city.

At night, the city transforms into a different scene. The sun slowly sets below the horizon, and the sky shifts from milky white to golden, then to deep blue, until it becomes completely dark. In the darkness, city lights begin to twinkle, filling the night with brightness.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
