Thai Food

When it comes to Thai cuisine, people often think of flavors that are sour and spicy, or a blend of spice and sweetness. However, Thailand is a vast country surrounded by many others, and in this diverse environment, different regions have developed their own unique culinary traditions. Whether it’s the climate, the soil, or historical events, each factor has contributed to the rich diversity of Thai food.

  1. Northern Thai Lanna Cuisine
The northern region of Thailand was once the independent Lanna Kingdom, and Northern Thai cuisine has been deeply influenced by the culinary traditions of Myanmar, Laos, and China’s Xishuangbanna. As a result, it stands apart from the other regional Thai cuisines. Northern Thai food tends to have a milder flavor profile, with coconut milk being used sparingly, and it often follows traditional cooking methods.

Recommended dishes: Sour Pork Sausage (Naem), Chiang Mai noodles (Khao Soi), Crispy Pork Skin, Northern Thai Sausage (Sai Oua)

  1. Northeastern Isan Cuisine
The northeastern region of Thailand, commonly known as the Isan region, has been heavily influenced by Laos. Isan cuisine is famous for its bold, intense flavors, with a focus on fresh fish and shrimp. The dishes are often seasoned with herbs and spices, delivering a rich, sour, and spicy taste that’s both vibrant and powerful.

Recommended dishes: Green Papaya Salad (Som Tum), Spicy and Sour Pork Rib Soup (Tom Saap), Pork Neck Salad (Moo Yang), Isan Sausage (Sai Krok Isan)

  1. Central Thai Cuisine
The central plains obf Thailand are fertile and abundant, and Bangkok, as a historic port city, has long been a center of trade and cultural exchange. As a result, Central Thai cuisine blends elements from various culinary traditions, particularly Thai royal court cuisine, Chinese food, and halal dishes. The flavors are typically sweet, and coconut milk is a common ingredient. Central Thai cuisine is also among the most familiar to tourists.

Recommended dishes: Tom Yum Goong (Spicy Shrimp Soup), Coconut Chicken Soup (Tom Kha Gai), Pad Thai (Thai Stir-Fried Noodles), Thai Fish Cakes (Tod Mun Pla), Mango Sticky Rice (Khao Niew Mamuang)

  1. Southern Thai Cuisine
Southern Thai cuisine, also known as “Patani” cuisine, gets its name from the Sultanate of Patani Kingdom, which governed the region in the 15th century, much like Lanna cuisine. The southern region has a strong fishing industry and is abundant in tropical fruits, so seafood, coconut, and fruits are frequently incorporated into dishes. Influenced by the food culture of neighboring Malaysia, Southern Thai cuisine is known for its bold, spicy, and intense flavors, often with Islamic culinary elements.

Recommended dishes: Thai Yellow Curry (Gaeng Karee), Thai Massaman Curry Chicken, Sour Spicy Fish Curry (Gaeng Som Pla)

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. I have traveled al over the world and they are definitively on the top service of the agencies I had used.

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
