Kampot

Kampot is a riverside city in southern Cambodia, nestled along the banks of the Teuk Chhou River. It is famed for its pepper plantations and salt fields. There are no rushed itineraries here—only lazy afternoons in swaying hammocks, river cruises upstream, and the bold, lingering flavor of pepper blooming on your tongue.

Kampot’s serene and peaceful atmosphere invites travelers to truly slow down and enjoy a relaxed, leisurely getaway.

1.Weather

Kampot has a typical tropical monsoon climate, characterized by abundant rainfall and hot, humid conditions throughout the year.

2.Popular Attractions

Bokor National Park: One of Cambodia’s most renowned nature reserves, Bokor National Park is home to a rich variety of plant life, including many rare and valuable trees. Venture into the heart of Bokor Mountain to discover secluded waterfalls, hike to the summit for sweeping, majestic views, and explore the ruins of an old church and palace. Here, nature and history coexist in a landscape where the ancient meets the alive.

Kampot Salt Fields: The Kampot Salt Fields produce the region’s distinctive, high-quality sea salt and fleur de sel, prized by chefs for their delicate texture and flavor. Visitors can learn about the centuries-old traditional sea salt harvesting process passed down through generations of local families. Beyond the salt itself, the salt fields are a magnet for photographers—on clear mornings or at sunset, the mirrored surfaces of the fields reflect the sky in dazzling colors, creating scenes that resemble a glowing “sky mirror”.

Kampot River Cruise: As evening approaches, choose a boat you like and wait for departure. As it slowly and calmly glides under a series of low bridges, the sunset unfolds before you—painting the river and distant mountains in shades of gold and crimson. After nightfall, the boat drifts toward the riverbanks, where swarms of fireflies begin to dance and swirl around, creating a scene straight out of a fairytale.

Durian Roundabout: Located in the center of Kampot, this roundabout features sculptures of the region’s locally grown fruits—such as durian, coconut, mango, rambutan, and mangosteen. At its heart stands the city’s iconic landmark: a massive durian sculpture, proudly symbolizing Kampot’s agricultural heritage.

3.Food

Kampot Durian Farms: Kampot is renowned as one of Cambodia’s best durian-producing regions. Alongside the rushing waters of the Teuk Chhou River, the air carries the unique aroma of Kampot durian. Locals call it the “fruit king”, claiming it is more fragrant than the Golden Pillow durian and sweeter than the Musang King durian. These durian farms have gained international fame, attracting many domestic and foreign tourists and wholesale buyers each year eager to taste and purchase the fruit.

Kampot Pepper Plantations: Kampot pepper is world-famous and often dubbed the “King of Peppers”. Grown using traditional methods, it has a distinctive floral aroma that sets it apart from ordinary pepper. Depending on processing, Kampot pepper comes in four varieties—black, white, green, and red—each offering a unique flavor profile. Here, visitors can learn about the history and culture behind Kampot pepper production and sample the different types to appreciate their special qualities.

4.Shopping

Samaki Market: It’s a traditional market popular with locals, where visitors can experience the authentic daily life of Kampot. The market offers a wide variety of goods, including local snacks, drinks, fresh produce, seafood, regional spices, herbs, and festive decorations. Seafood is especially abundant here.

Old Market Street: It’s a great place to find a variety of Cambodian souvenirs, perfect for picking up keepsakes and gifts.

5.Transportation Guide

Tuk-tuk: It’s the most common mode of transport in Kampot. Small and nimble, tuk-tuks can easily weave through the town’s streets and alleys, making trips to local markets, beaches, and residential areas convenient. It’s ideal for short-distance travel.

Motorbike: Even more flexible and convenient, motorbikes can navigate narrow paths and congested areas with ease.

Walking: Kampot’s town center is compact, making walking an excellent way to explore the area at your own pace.

6.Recommended Accommodation

City Center: Offering convenient transportation and close proximity to major attractions and shopping areas, the city center boasts a wide range of accommodations—from budget hotels to upscale resorts.

Suburbs: Away from the bustling city, the suburbs provide a peaceful environment where you can enjoy Kampot’s natural beauty. Accommodation here tends to be more affordable.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
