Kep City

Kep is a charming coastal city, best known for its natural beaches, the tranquil Rabbit Island, and its famous crab market.

Once a luxurious retreat for French aristocrats and Phnom Penh’s elite, Kep’s coastline was lined with hundreds of grand villas. Today, these once-opulent structures stand in ruins, forming a unique seascape alongside palm trees and rocky shores.

Kep is like a fairytale written for adults—quiet and unassuming, yet deeply touching. It offers a different face of Cambodia: one of quiet strength, reborn in the salty sea breeze, after the splendor has faded and the scars have softened.

1.Weather

Kep is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is from November to February when the skies are clear and the sea breeze is gentle—perfect for cycling and island-hopping.

The rainy season runs from May to October, with September and October seeing the heaviest rainfall. During this period, some rural roads may become difficult to access, so it’s best to plan your itinerary accordingly.

2.Popular Attractions

Kep National Park: For a refreshing escape into nature, hike or cycle through Kep National Park. Make your way to the hilltop for sweeping views of the coastal landscape below. Along the trails, you’ll likely encounter playful wild monkeys—so be mindful during your climb!

Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay): A must-visit for island-hopping in Kep, Rabbit Island is just a 20-minute boat ride away. The boat docks near a stretch of soft white sand that runs several hundred meters. Largely untouched by modern development, the island is perfect for those looking to escape city life and enjoy a rustic seaside retreat. Swaying palm trees, cozy nature-inspired bungalows, and sun-soaked benches by the shore offer a truly peaceful, back-to-basics experience. The shallow, clear waters along the coast are ideal for swimming and splashing around.

Kep Beach: A popular photo spot along the coast, Kep Beach is home to the iconic crab statue standing in the sea—a must-see landmark of the city.

3.Food

Crab Market: For many visitors, the Crab Market is the most unforgettable part of their trip to Kep. This lively market is known for its freshly caught seafood. Local fishermen keep live crabs in bamboo cages submerged in the sea to ensure their freshness. When a sale is made, they wade into the water and haul the cages ashore, allowing customers to handpick their crabs on the spot. Prices vary by season, and you can have your chosen crabs cooked fresh by one of the many nearby food stalls. In addition to crabs, the market also offers grilled shrimp and fish, tropical fruits, local sweets, sauces, and a variety of souvenirs made from seashells.

4.Transportation Guide

Tuk-tuk: A common mode of transport in Kep, tuk-tuks are ideal for short-distance trips around town.

Bicycle: With flat and scenic coastal roads, cycling is one of the best ways to explore Kep’s seaside charm.

Boat: Boats are the primary means of transportation for island-hopping, especially for visiting Rabbit Island.

5.Recommended Accommodation

Seaside Area: This area offers beautiful views, with some accommodations featuring direct sea views. It’s also conveniently located near the Crab Market, within walking distance, making it a scenic choice.

Rabbit Island: For a more rustic and nature-filled experience, staying on Rabbit Island lets you fully immerse yourself in island life, away from modern distractions.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
