In Mongolia, there is a “breathing grassland” hidden within the popular natural destination — Terelj National Park. It’s just over an hour’s drive from the capital city, Ulaanbaatar.

Most of the park remains in its original, untouched state, offering a truly authentic and expansive natural experience. Under the blue sky and white clouds, mountains, forests, and grasslands weave together in a breathtaking landscape. The Tuul and Terelj Rivers flow through the entire park, while herds of sheep, horses, and cattle roam freely across meadows and hillsides. Scattered yurts and wooden cabins complete the scene, creating a paradise that feels almost otherworldly.
The park is home to many natural formations, including its iconic landmark — Turtle Rock. This unique rock formation earned its name because its jagged rocks naturally resemble the shape of a turtle. Standing quietly on the vast grassland, it looks like a mythical relic frozen in time.
In addition to being a natural wonder, Terelj National Park is also the closest resort destination to Ulaanbaatar. A small area in the southern part of the park has been developed for tourism. On weekends and holidays, local Mongolians and international backpackers alike come here to set up camp and enjoy a leisurely life on the grasslands.
In the developed area, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities such as horseback riding, hiking, and rock climbing — all easily accessible.
Choose a yurt or pitch a tent at the campsite, and as night falls, light a campfire under the starry sky. With the sound of sizzling barbecue in the background, listen to the nomads share stories of the grasslands. It’s a quiet and heartwarming moment that feels like it can soothe everything.
