Bacolod City in the Philippines is the heart of the country’s sugar industry, which has long been the economic lifeline for local residents. However, from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, intensified competition in the global sugar market and the rise of sugar substitutes led to sharp fluctuations in sugar prices. As a result, the local sugar industry fell into a severe crisis, causing widespread unemployment, plunging residents into hardship, and posing major challenges to the city’s economy.
Bacolod is known as the “City of Smiles” because of the warm, friendly people who greet others with smiles. Yet in the face of such a profound crisis, it was inevitable that spirits would sink. To encourage residents to confront adversity with resilience and to help the City of Smiles regain its strength, various institutions and organizations came together to launch the first MassKara Festival (Festival of Smiles), calling on people to face the hardship with tears in their eyes but smiles on their faces.
Since then, the MassKara Festival has become an annual event held every October. When the festival arrives, people dress in brightly colored costumes and wear a wide variety of smiling masks, moving through the streets of Bacolod in groups to the rhythm of energetic and passionate Latin music.
The smiling masks worn by participants, each with its own distinctive design, are the most striking highlight and the most iconic symbol of the festival. Behind those masks lies the overflowing spirit of optimism that defines the city.
In addition to the parades, the festival features a wide range of activities, including the MassKara Queen beauty pageant, carnivals, food festivals, concerts, and garden exhibitions. With so much to see and do, there is never a dull moment during the celebrations.
During the MassKara Festival, the entire city is filled with a joyful atmosphere. Through color, music, and their iconic smiling masks, the people of Bacolod transform hardship into hope and turn resilience into celebration.
Although the sugar industry no longer enjoys its former glory, the spirit of the “City of Smiles” shines more brightly than ever. Today, Bacolod welcomes visitors from around the world with its rich culture, distinctive cuisine, warm hospitality, and smiles that never give up.
