The vast, boundless ocean has always held a natural and profound allure for those who live on land. Beneath its blue surface, however, lies something even more awe-inspiring: a colossal presence that commands reverence—the whale shark, the largest fish in the world.

An adult whale shark can reach a length of 10 to 20 meters. Its deep blue back is dotted with star-like white spots, and as it glides through the water, it resembles a galaxy drifting across the depths of the sea.

 

 

Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are remarkably gentle. They feed on plankton and never actively attack other creatures, coexisting peacefully with humans. It is precisely this combination of gentleness and mystery that has driven divers and nature enthusiasts for years to tirelessly explore oceans around the world, all for the chance to encounter this “gentle giant”, even if only briefly.

When the once little-known fishing village of Oslob, at the southernmost tip of Cebu in the Philippines, rose to prominence, witnessing whale sharks suddenly became effortlessly accessible.

Here, there is no need for long searches, no reliance on luck, and no fear of missing out. At dawn, the moment you dive into the sea, massive whale sharks will be right beside you. With just a turn, you can gaze deeply into that “brilliant galaxy”. Their tails gently sway, creating ripples, and though they are close, there is no sense of pressure—only awe.

Oslob was originally just an ordinary fishing village reliant on its catch. When whale sharks began visiting the area, fishermen would feed them leftover bait. Over time, this feeding habit has partially altered and disrupted the whale sharks’ natural migratory patterns, leading to an unusually high frequency of their visits. Consequently, with the intervention of environmental organizations, the practice of feeding whale sharks has been regulated. The local government has since established a supervised whale shark interaction zone, allowing people the opportunity to come face-to-face with these gentle giants while preserving the ecological balance.

During those brief moments of locking eyes and swimming alongside a whale shark, it feels as if you’ve been invited into another world, attending a soul-stirring rendezvous on the flip side of the land.
