Bukchon Hanok Village

Bukchon Hanok Village is a unique and charming place in the center of Seoul. It is located between Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Jongmyo Shrine, and is the most representative traditional hanok residential area in Seoul, South Korea. After hundreds of years, it has still preserved its original architectural layout and appearance, making it a valuable place for understanding hanok history, cultural heritage, and folk traditions, and it can be called a “street museum in the city center.”

The history of Bukchon Hanok Village can be traced back to the Joseon Dynasty, when it was originally the main residential area for yangban aristocrats (civil and military officials). There are currently more than 900 hanok houses, most of which are wooden structures featuring sloped roofs, rounded beams, and double eaves. The blue-gray eaves and brackets are highly distinctive; these hanok emphasize harmony with nature. Windows are often fitted with glass doors, the eaves are covered with metal sheets, and some exterior walls are covered with climbing plants, creating rich colors. The houses are arranged compactly, with narrow and winding alleys forming a dense, layered landscape. Viewed from above, the rooftops rise and fall in succession, forming a striking contrast with the modern buildings in the distance. Because of this unique scenery, many Korean dramas are filmed here, and if you are a fan of Korean dramas, you will definitely recognize many scenes from your memories.

Bukchon Hanok Village is not a tourist attraction separated from daily life, but a residential area where many people still live today. Scattered among the houses are hanok galleries, traditional craft workshops, specialty cafés, and hanbok shops. Visitors can not only stroll through the area to enjoy the scenery, but also enter shops along the street to experience traditional crafts such as embroidery and fan-making, and feel the perfect integration of modern art and traditional culture, as well as residents’ daily life and tourism.

When visiting here, it is recommended to choose the classic route and check in at the “Eight Views of Bukchon.” These eight scenic spots were selected by local photographers as the best shooting locations, namely: Changdeokgung Palace, Wonseo-dong Workshop Street, the Gahoe-dong area, Gahoe-dong Hill (Bukchon Observatory), Gahoe-dong Uphill Road, Gahoe-dong Downhill Road, No. 31, Gahoe-dong, and the Samcheong-dong Stone Stairway. Following this route allows you to appreciate the unique beauty of Bukchon Hanok Village from different perspectives, and it takes about 2–3 hours to complete the entire walk.

Stroll through the narrow alleys, feel the tranquil atmosphere, and carefully appreciate the details of traditional architecture. Take a short break in a café or restaurant converted from a hanok to experience authentic Korean lifestyle. Visit cultural centers and museums to gain a deeper understanding of traditional Korean culture. Or stay overnight in a traditional hanok to enjoy a unique accommodation experience. Bukchon Hanok Village is a must-visit destination on a trip to Korea.

We traveled to China during 05th May to 17th May, 2026. Here goes our comment.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
