The origins of Gamcheon Culture Village can be traced back to the 1950s during the war period. At that time, a large number of refugees fled to Busan to escape the war and built simple wooden houses on the steep slopes of Gamcheon-dong in Saha District, forming a unique terraced residential area. These houses are stacked layer upon layer, with alleys crisscrossing throughout, resembling a vast maze.
It was not until 2009 that the Busan Metropolitan City government, together with local artists and residents, launched the “Village Art Project.” Through murals, sculptures, and installation art, they transformed the once dilapidated community into an open-air art gallery.
