Hwacheon Trout Ice Fishing Festival

The Hwacheon Trout Ice Fishing Festival is a signature winter celebration held annually in Hwacheon County, Gangwon Province, South Korea. The festival, which began in 2003, is rooted in the traditional survival wisdom of local fishermen who carved holes in the ice to catch fish during the harsh winter months.

Located at the northernmost part of South Korea, Hwacheon experiences extremely cold winters, with ice forming up to 40 cm thick on the river. It is one of the earliest and thickest frozen regions in the country. In order to survive the cold months, local fishermen developed the technique of ice fishing, drilling holes in the frozen river to catch trout, which became the foundation of the ice fishing activity.

From mid-January to early February every year, Hwacheon transforms into a massive winter wonderland, waiting for visitors from around the world to experience this unique winter fun.

In the vast ice fishing zone, the organizers pre-drill over 12,000 ice holes and stock the area with a large number of mountain trout each day to ensure that every visitor can enjoy the experience of ice fishing. No special skills are required, making it easy for people of all ages to enjoy. There is even a special night-time ice fishing zone, offering a unique experience after dark.

If the ice fishing isn’t enough, visitors can also challenge themselves with “barehanded fish catching”—jumping barefoot into the freezing cold water and chasing the fish in the icy waters for an exhilarating experience.

From the ice river to the dining table, delicious meals are just moments away. The freshly caught fish can be immediately taken to the cooking area, where it can be made into sashimi or grilled over charcoal for an unmatched culinary delight.

Beyond the ice fishing, the entire festival site transforms into a giant natural playground. Visitors can enjoy a variety of winter activities, including skiing, ice sledding, curling, and figure skating, making it suitable for all ages to enjoy.

Additionally, during the festival, a grand ice sculpture exhibition is held, with artists from Harbin, China, creating stunning ice sculptures, adding to the dreamlike winter scenery.

Cultural performances are also an integral part of the event, with traditional Korean music and dance performances adding to the festive atmosphere.

If you’re longing for a unique winter trip, the Hwacheon Trout Ice Fishing Festival is definitely worth a visit. You can watch the flowing water beneath the ice and feel the excitement when a fish bites the hook amidst the cheers. You can stand on the frozen river, watch the lively crowd, and experience the warmth of human connection in the midst of the icy world. Whether you’re sharing precious family time or adventuring with friends, this winter celebration in Hwacheon will become one of the coldest yet most passionate memories of your journey.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
