2. Popular Attractions
Sacred Garden of Lumbini: According to legend, Queen Māyā of King Śuddhodana of the ancient Kapilavastu Kingdom was returning to her maternal home to give birth, as per local custom. On the way, she passed through the Lumbini Garden and gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama—who would later become Shakyamuni Buddha—beneath a sal tree. Buddhists revere this garden where the Buddha was born as the “Sacred Garden”. To honor his birth, many temples and stupas have been built here.
Maya Devi Temple: Located at the heart of the Sacred Garden, this central heritage site commemorates and honors Queen Māyā, the mother of Shakyamuni Buddha. At the very center of the temple lies a stone bearing small footprints, marking the exact spot where Prince Siddhartha was born. Above the stone is a carved relief depicting Queen Māyā giving birth from through her side.
Ashoka Pillar: Standing beside the Maya Devi Temple is a stone pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka. According to legend, Emperor Ashoka, a devoted follower of Buddhism, journeyed from afar to pay homage at the Buddha’s birthplace. He commissioned the pillar as a tribute and as lasting evidence of the sacred site, helping to confirm the exact location of the Buddha’s birth.
Lumbini International Monastic Zone: Located to the north of the Sacred Garden, the International Monastic Zone is divided into eastern and western monastic complexes, separated by a canal. The western zone is home to Mahayana Buddhist temples, including temples from China, Vietnam, and South Korea, as well as monasteries and stupas built by foundations from Austria, Germany, and Japan. The eastern zone features Theravāda Buddhist temples from countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka, along with nunneries and meditation centers. Each structure is uniquely designed and exquisitely decorated, making them well worth visiting.
Lumbini Museum: Located behind the monastic zone, the Lumbini Museum houses a rich collection of Buddhist artifacts, including sculptures, scriptures, paintings, and murals. It offers valuable insights into the origins, spread, and development of Buddhism.
Kapilavastu Ruins: A sacred Buddhist site and ancient city ruins in Nepal, Kapilavastu is where Prince Siddhartha spent the first 29 years of his life before renouncing worldly life to seek enlightenment.
