The Newar New Year in Nepal is an important traditional festival, usually celebrated on the first day of the Nepalese calendar year (between mid-April and early May).
The Newars are one of the major ethnic groups in Nepal and the indigenous inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley, making up about half of the valley’s population. They have a rich and unique cultural heritage, and the Newar New Year is one of their grandest celebrations.
On this day, Newar families clean and decorate their homes, and family members who live away return to reunite with their loved ones. Dressed in traditional Newar attire, family members gather together. The father, as the head of the household, draws two auspicious symbols—one to protect the family, and one as an offering to the god of death. After the blessings, it’s time for a festive family feast. They enjoy symbolic foods such as sweets, eggs, and fried fish—each representing good luck and prosperity—and toast the new year with a sip of homemade rice wine, welcoming the arrival of the New Year together.
Stepping outside, the festive atmosphere grows even stronger, with people participating in various rituals and activities to celebrate the New Year.
In the early morning, grand worship ceremonies are held at the temples, where people gather to offer prayers for peace and happiness in the coming year.
Later, majestic chariot processions take place in the streets. People surround the ornate, towering chariots to offer blood sacrifices and prayers.
During the chariot procession, intense tug-of-war competitions are held. Only the team that emerges victorious after the long and fierce contest earns the honor of serving the deity. In addition to tug-of-war, people also organize traditional games and sports such as football matches.
Dance is also an essential part of the Newar New Year celebrations. Dressed in traditional Newar attire, people perform traditional Newar dances to the rhythms of traditional Newar music. In these moments, the rich cultural charm of the Newar people is fully displayed.
