Every August, the Singapore Night Festival (SNF) kicks off grandly in downtown Singapore. As Singapore’s largest nighttime event, it features street performances, cultural displays, and light shows, offering an inspiring and mesmerizing experience. As night falls, explore the streets of this modern city with a fresh perspective.
In 2024, the Singapore Night Festival celebrated its 15th grand edition, with unprecedented scale! The event took place from August 23 to September 7, 2024, in the Bras Basah-Bugis (BBB) area, and for the first time, it was extended to three weekends.
Since its inception, the Singapore Night Festival has been a key platform for fostering the development of Singapore’s arts and cultural heritage. This year’s largest nighttime event will guide audiences in exploring and understanding the rich history of the area. The festival features over 50 programs, including light projection art, performances, a festival village, luminous installations, and collaborative projects.
Get ready to be transported back to the enchanting amusement parks of old Singapore! Local contemporary artist Sam Lo (also known as SKL0) presented “Wonder World: The Machine of Nostalgia”. This captivating experience reimagines the magic of the 1950s Singaporean “great world” amusement park, inviting visitors to reflect on the coexistence and balance between preserving traditions and embracing modernization, as well as the role of nostalgia in today’s society.
The luminous night installations once again lit up the everyday spaces of the BBB area, showcasing 10 light and shadow installations inspired by the concept of “play”. At the Stamford Arts Centre (SAC), Rizman Putra’s “The Happiest Days of Our Lives” evokes childhood nostalgia through retro illustrations from the 60s to the 90s. Inspired by SAC’s long history as a site for various educational institutions, this blacklight immersive mural aims to transport viewers into a vibrant neon world, paying tribute to bygone eras.
Singapore Night Festival 2024 once again featured light projection installations, a festival tradition that showcases a blend of nostalgia, imagination, and creativity. These installations will illuminate the façades of two cultural buildings in the BBB area that were once schools, inviting everyone to rediscover the joy of play and artistic expression.
Singapore Night Festival 2024 introduced four distinctive festival villages. Among them is the Late Night Festival Village, “Twilight Playground @ GR.iD”, inspired by GR.iD’s youthful-oriented offerings and avant-garde atmosphere. This village will transform into an interactive playground featuring escape room experiences, a beer garden, and various culinary delights. The three returning festival villages are:
– “SMU Arts Festival 2024: Play” at SMU Campus Green: a collaboration with Singapore Management University (SMU), showcasing a delightful mix of nostalgia and interdisciplinary collaborations.
– Festival Village @ CHIJMES: an oasis within a historic landmark surrounded by restaurants.
– “Pixel Paradise: Singapore Night Festival” at Armenian Street, inspired by Peranakan Museum beadwork and retro video games.
All four festival villages will feature luminous night installations, performances, and a variety of culinary experiences.
