Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival

Every autumn, the city of Jinju in Korea’s South Gyeongsang Province hosts an ancient and romantic spectacle of light—the Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival. As night falls, thousands of glowing lanterns drift slowly along the Nam River, their reflections shimmering on the rippling water, transforming the entire city into a dreamlike “city of lights”.

The origins of the festival date back to the Imjin War in 1592, during the Battle of Jinju Fortress. Soldiers released lit lanterns onto the river, allowing them to float downstream as signals to communicate and deliver messages. The following year, during the second battle, more than 70,000 soldiers and civilians lost their lives. In their memory, this wartime tactic gradually evolved into a ritual of remembrance. Over the centuries, it has grown into the grand festival seen today.

The Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival is usually held in October and lasts for about two weeks. The main venue is set along the Nam River and its surrounding areas, particularly around Namgang-ro in Jinju.

One of the most breathtaking highlights is the large-scale lantern exhibition installed across the river, featuring over a thousand themed displays. Tens of thousands of intricately crafted lanterns tell stories of history, culture, and nature, glowing against the shimmering river to create a dazzling nighttime panorama. While preserving tradition, some sections incorporate modern elements such as 3D holographic lanterns and movable installations, adding an extra sense of wonder.

For those who prefer to avoid the crowds, taking a boat ride is an excellent option. From the water, visitors can admire the lanterns up close and fully experience the unique interplay of light and reflection.

Beyond sightseeing, the festival’s most meaningful experience is the wish lantern ritual. Visitors can make their own lanterns, write down their hopes, and either hang them in illuminated tunnels or release them onto the river—symbolizing the passing on of blessings and wishes.

During the festival, stage performances are equally vibrant. Traditional music, dance, instrumental performances, folk shows, and street parades take place throughout the day. At night, a spectacular fireworks display lights up the sky above the Nam River, its brilliance mirrored in the water and blending with the countless lanterns, as if the entire river were glowing.

And where there are festivities, there is food. The riverbanks are lined with street food stalls and food trucks offering a wide variety of authentic Korean flavors.

Before you leave, don’t miss the chance to visit Jinju Fortress. From its ancient walls, you can take in a magnificent panoramic view of the lanterns drifting along the Nam River.

The Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival is more than just a visual feast—it is a journey through light and history. Each floating lantern carries prayers for peace, respect for the past, and hopes for the future, gently drifting along the waters of the Nam River.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
