Shopping in Indonesia

Indonesia offers a rich variety of unique and high-quality products that reflect its diverse culture, abundant natural resources, and centuries-old traditions. From rare delicacies like Kopi Luwak and nutritious bird’s nests to exquisite handicrafts such as batik fabrics and coconut-based items, as well as the world-renowned South Sea pearls, travelers can find items that are both authentic and representative of the country’s heritage. Whether for personal enjoyment or as thoughtful gifts, these products showcase the craftsmanship, flavor, and natural beauty that make Indonesian shopping truly special.

1.Kopi Luwak (Civet Coffee)

Kopi Luwak is an extremely unique and rare type of coffee, made from beans that have been eaten and excreted by the civet cat. These cats are very selective with the coffee cherries they consume, usually choosing only the ripest and sweetest ones. As the beans pass through the civet’s digestive system, they undergo a fermentation process that gives the coffee a distinctive flavor, making it exceptionally rich and aromatic.

Indonesia is the world-famous origin of Kopi Luwak, where you can both taste and purchase authentic civet coffee.

2.Bird’s Nest

Indonesia is the largest producer and exporter of bird’s nest, supplying approximately 80% of the world’s bird’s nests. The main production areas include Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Java, which feature a tropical rainforest climate—warm, humid, and relatively unpolluted—providing an ideal habitat for swiftlets.

Indonesian bird’s nests are thick and sturdy with high-quality strands, making them highly nutritious. They can be prepared with milk, red dates, rock sugar, and other ingredients to make desserts or soups.

3.Batik Fabric

Batik fabric is a type of printed cloth made using Indonesia’s traditional wax-resist dyeing technique, which has a history of over 2,000 years and is considered a symbol of Indonesian culture.

The production process is very intricate. First, a design is drawn with hot wax, then the cloth is dipped into a dye bath. The waxed areas resist the dye, creating the outline of the pattern. After dyeing, the wax is removed. If multiple colors are desired, this process is repeated several times. The result is a fabric with rich colors and exquisite patterns.

Traditional batik fabrics are usually colored in indigo, dark brown, and white, while modern batik features a wider and more vibrant palette.

Batik patterns are extremely diverse, ranging from geometric shapes to flowers, birds, insects, fish, and animals like tigers and dragons, as well as abstract or freehand designs. Each region in Indonesia also has its own distinctive batik style.

These fabrics are commonly made into women’s sarongs and men’s long-sleeve shirts, and are highly popular among Indonesians, worn in both formal and casual settings.

4.Coconut Products

Indonesia’s unique geography and natural conditions make it the world’s largest coconut producer, resulting in a wide variety of coconut-based products spanning food, daily necessities, and handicrafts.

The coconut shell is hard and naturally textured. With skilled craftsmanship, it can be made into bowls, spoons, storage boxes, or carved into decorative ornaments, pendants, and jewelry, offering both an eco-friendly and locally distinctive option.

The coconut meat can be processed into nutritious coconut oil for cooking or skincare, rich coconut milk or cream, which is essential in Southeast Asian cuisine, or dried coconut flakes used in baking and desserts. Fresh coconut meat can also be eaten directly or processed into shredded coconut or coconut chips as healthy snacks.

5.South Sea Pearls

Thanks to its extensive coastline, clear and unpolluted waters, and favorable temperature and ecological conditions, Indonesia is one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of natural saltwater pearls.

South Sea pearls are a type of precious saltwater pearl produced by the large Pinctada maxima oyster. These pearls are relatively large in diameter and are often called the “Queen of Pearls”. Renowned for their exceptional quality and natural beauty, they are meticulously crafted by top jewelry brands into pendants, earrings, rings, and necklaces. South Sea pearls are highly valued by collectors and are considered classic accessories for elegant occasions.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
