About

Surabaya

Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, is a “city of heroes” that witnessed Indonesia’s struggle for independence. It is also a stopover for those heading to volcanic wonders and a melting pot of multicultural fusion.

As you explore this beautiful city where modernity meets historical remnants, you’ll find an abundance of hidden treasures that will surprise you at every turn.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an urban explorer, or a traveler about to embark on a volcanic adventure, Surabaya will leave a lasting impression on you.

1.Weather

Surabaya has a typical tropical climate, with year-round high temperatures and humidity. It experiences dry and rainy seasons.

Dry Season (May – October): With less rainfall, the weather is sunny and clear, perfect for outdoor adventures, volcano treks, and sightseeing. This is the prime season for visiting Surabaya.

Rainy Season (November – April): Rain is frequent during this period. Although travel may be affected by inconvenient transportation and the temporary closure of some volcanic sites, the mountain landscapes look stunning, with lush greenery after the rain.

2.Popular Attractions

Mount Bromo: One of Indonesia’s famous active volcanoes, it is known for its unique crater, vast sand sea, and breathtaking sunrise views. Take a jeep to the viewpoint at dawn, where you’ll witness the clouds swirling and the massive volcano crater releasing white smoke. As the sun rises, golden sunlight illuminates the crater and the cloud sea, creating a surreal, fairy-tale landscape.

Mount Ijen: It is famous for its massive acidic crater lake and rare blue flames. Hiking at night, you can witness the intense blue flames created by sulfur gas combustion, set against the turquoise lake, making for an incredible visual experience.

Tritil Waterfall: It is the most spectacular waterfall in East Java. Multiple streams cascade in a semi-circular shape from a 100-meter-high cliff, creating a magnificent water curtain. Visitors can descend steep stairs to the base of the waterfall, where the mist from the waterfall envelops them.

Heroes Monument: This iconic landmark in Surabaya was built to commemorate the heroes who died during Indonesia’s war of independence. Its design resembles a rocket ready to launch. The park surrounding the monument is a popular spot for local leisure.

Ampel Mosque: It is the oldest and most historically significant mosque in East Java, having witnessed the spread of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago.

Surabaya Zoo: The zoo is one of Indonesia’s largest zoos, home to species such as the Komodo dragon, Sumatran tiger, and orangutan. The zoo offers a beautiful environment, making it an ideal family destination.

Surabaya Submarine Museum: It is Indonesia’s only military museum centered around a decommissioned submarine and one of the signature structures of Surabaya. It is located in the city’s central square, and visitors can explore the narrow passages, torpedo compartments, and the control room, offering a close look at Indonesia’s naval history.

3.Dining

Surabaya Night Market (Pasar Malam Genteng): Built with a theme park concept, this vibrant market combines entertainment, shopping, and dining. The dazzling lights at night, along with amusement rides, food stalls, and unique products, make it an excellent place to experience Surabaya’s nightlife.

Surabaya Seaside Night Market (Pasar Malam Pantai): Combining a scenic seaside view and night market vibes, visitors can enjoy seafood snacks while relaxing in the atmosphere. Some night markets also host open-air stages for music performances and cultural activities.

4.Shopping

Tunjungan Plaza: A long-established shopping mall located in the city center, offering international brands and local shops. It has a wide selection of clothing, cosmetics, electronics, and home goods, along with dining areas and cinemas for a complete shopping and leisure experience.

Galaxy Mall: It is a high-end shopping mall offering clothing, footwear, accessories, electronics, and home goods. With a food court and entertainment facilities, it’s a great place for family shopping and relaxation.

Spice Market: Located in the northern part of Surabaya, this traditional market is a living testament to Surabaya’s spice trade history. The air is filled with the rich aromas of cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon, where you can buy authentic Indonesian spices and traditional herbs, taking a piece of Indonesia home with you.

5.Transportation Guide

Kura-Kura Bus: It is a sightseeing bus designed for tourists, covering Surabaya’s main attractions and shopping areas. It’s a convenient way to explore and shop.

Public Buses: Surabaya has regular public bus routes, which are affordable, though the stations are not densely located, and the buses have longer intervals.

Online Taxis: You can use online ride-hailing apps for taxis or motorcycles, offering safe and transparent pricing.

Charter Cars: They are ideal for visiting distant attractions like Mount Bromo, Mount Ijen, and Seawu Waterfall. Chartering a car makes traveling to these remote sites much easier.

Jeeps: Suitable for reaching mountainous areas with rugged roads, jeeps are perfect for crossing sand seas and rough mountain paths.

6.Accommodation Recommendations

City Center Area: Close to major landmarks like the Heroes Monument and shopping centers, this area offers convenient transportation and is surrounded by restaurants and entertainment options.

Volcano Surrounding Area: With tranquil surroundings, you can enjoy views of the volcano right from your window. Staying near the volcano is especially convenient if you plan on hiking to Mount Bromo at night.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
