Dalanzadgad is the capital city of Ömnögovi Province in Mongolia and one of the few places in the province with a lively, lived-in atmosphere.
Nestled at the foot of the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains, Dalanzadgad is a pocket of civilization in the desert and the starting point for adventures into the Gobi wilderness.
Listen to the “song of the earth” atop the Khongor Sand Dunes, feel the lingering warmth of the dinosaur age in the shadows of Bayanzag, and experience both the smallness of humanity and the vastness of the cosmos beneath an endless starry sky — this is a journey destined to be unforgettable.

1.Weather
Dalanzadgad and the South Gobi region experience scorching hot, dry summers and bitterly cold winters. Spring and autumn are short, with frequent winds and sandstorms, and rainfall is extremely scarce.
The best time to visit is during the spring and autumn months from April to May and from September to mid-October. During this period, the sunshine is ample but not overly harsh, with warm days and cool, but not too cold, nights. Occasional winds and sandstorms may occur, but the conditions are ideal for hiking and exploration. In addition, the Gobi’s colors are more vivid, wildlife is more active, and the overall experience is greatly enhanced.
From June to August, summer in the region is extremely hot and dry, making outdoor activities relatively challenging, with a higher likelihood of sandstorms.
From November to March, winter brings bitter cold. Travel during this season is recommended only for adventurers with experience in extreme environments, who will be rewarded with the Gobi’s unique snowy landscapes.
2.Popular Attractions
Dalanzadgad generally serves as a transit hub and supply base for exploring attractions in the Gobi region.
Khongor Sand Dunes: It is the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in the Mongolian Gobi, stretching for over 180 kilometers. When the wind sweeps across the sand, a mysterious “song” resonates from deep within the dunes — an awe-inspiring and almost mystical phenomenon that has earned them the name “Singing Dunes”. At sunrise and sunset, the shifting light and shadows over the golden slopes create breathtaking scenery.
Yolyn Am (Yolyn Canyon): Flanked by towering cliffs hundreds of meters high, the canyon has a small river running along its base, with sections of ice that sometimes persist even through summer. The cliffs are home to agile ibex, while the skies above are patrolled by soaring eagles, making it a place rich in natural wildlife.
Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs): In Mongolian, the name means “Flaming Cliffs”. Its striking red sandstone formations glow like fire under the sunlight, perfectly matching the name. Bayanzag is world-famous for the discovery of numerous dinosaur fossils and eggs, which confirmed that dinosaurs were oviparous rather than viviparous.
