Swayambhunath Temple

Swayambhunath Temple is located atop Swayambhu Hill on the western outskirts of Kathmandu, about 4 kilometers from the city center.

When you arrive at the temple, the first thing that will catch your eye is the lively monkeys darting around everywhere. Living freely and fearlessly on this sacred ground, they’ve earned the temple its popular nickname among tourists: the “Monkey Temple”.

Swayambhunath Temple, believed to have been founded around the 3rd century BCE, is Nepal’s oldest Tibetan Buddhist sanctuary and one of the most ancient Buddhist sites in all of Asia.

There is a well-known legend surrounding its origin: It is said that the Kathmandu Valley was once a vast lake. One day, a glowing lotus miraculously bloomed from its waters. Hearing of this, Manjushri—the Bodhisattva of Wisdom—traveled all the way from Mount Wutai in China. Sensing the divine presence of a self-radiant image of the Adi-Buddha within the lotus, Manjushri cut through the surrounding hills with his sword, allowing the lake to drain and the image to emerge. As the water receded, the lake turned into a valley, which became habitable, and prosperity followed. To enshrine and honor the radiant image and the transformative power it symbolized, people built Swayambhunath Temple directly over it. “Swayambhu” means “self-existent” or “self-emergent”, representing the purity and brilliance of Buddhism itself.

The main structure of Swayambhunath Temple is a large stupa with a unique design, divided into five symbolic tiers: The first tier is a pure white circular base, symbolizing earth. The second tier is a golden square structure, representing air. The third tier is triangular in shape, symbolizing water. The fourth tier is spiral-shaped, representing fire. The fifth tier features a parasol-shaped canopy and a pinnacle, symbolizing life.

The most distinctive feature is the large Buddha eyes painted on all four sides of the square structure. These are known as the Eyes of Wisdom, symbolizing the Buddha’s supreme insight. Gazing down from above, they see all beings, missing nothing. Around the main stupa, there are several smaller reliquary stupas and prayer wheels. Within the temple grounds, there is also a wishing pond where visitors can toss a coin and make a wish.

We traveled to China during 05th May to 17th May, 2026. Here goes our comment.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
