Seoul Winter Festa

When winter is mentioned, people often associate it with coldness and bleak landscapes. Yet in Seoul, South Korea, winter becomes a season synonymous with romance, fantasy, and vibrant energy.

Every year, Seoul hosts the grand “Seoul Winter Festa.” Through dazzling light shows, immersive winter experiences, and a wide range of cultural programs, the entire city is transformed into a dreamlike winter kingdom. The festival not only illuminates Seoul’s cold winter nights but also brings warmth, color, and joy to the lives of both residents and visitors.

The Seoul Winter Festa usually runs from mid-December to early January of the following year. Rather than being a single event, it is a large-scale integrated festival that connects multiple winter-themed celebrations across the city, forming a unified and signature seasonal brand.

The festival traditionally opens at Gwanghwamun Square with a spectacular themed light show and live stage performances. Combining media art, projection mapping, and large-scale light installations, the show blends traditional and contemporary elements, showcasing both Seoul’s cultural heritage and its technological innovation.

The entire festival cleverly links six iconic districts across central Seoul into a seamless experiential route, with each location offering its own unique theme and activities:

Gwanghwamun Square: It is the heart of the festival, hosting the “Seoul Light Gwanghwamun” show and the Gwanghwamun Market themed around Santa’s Village. In addition to various booths, the area features a giant Christmas tree, Rudolph-themed carousel, and other festive installations, creating a fairytale-like atmosphere.

Cheonggyecheon Stream: It is home to the famous “Seoul Lantern Festival,” where a 1.5-kilometer stretch of the stream is illuminated by hundreds of uniquely designed light installations. The glowing artworks blend beautifully with the flowing water, forming a breathtaking visual landscape.

Seoul Plaza: An open-air ice rink is set up here, reviving traditional winter activities such as sledding and spinning tops, allowing visitors and locals to enjoy classic seasonal fun.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP): It hosts the media art festival “Seoul Light DDP” and the global creator exhibition “Seoulcon,” bringing together artists and cultural creators from around the world.

Bosingak Pavilion: At the turn of the year, the solemn New Year’s bell-ringing ceremony takes place here. Combined with light displays and a countdown with thousands of citizens, the ringing bells mark the arrival of the new year.

The Seoul Winter Festa is more than a visual spectacle of light and shadow—it is a warm invitation to the world. It seamlessly integrates elements of Korean popular culture such as K-pop, K-beauty, and K-fashion, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery while also experiencing Korea’s contemporary cultural identity.

This festival transforms cold winter nights into a stage of warmth and wonder, turning ordinary urban spaces into realms of imagination. Whether you are making a wish beneath the Christmas tree at Gwanghwamun Square, admiring the glowing light river along Cheonggyecheon Stream, or welcoming the new year under the ringing bells of Bosingak, the Seoul Winter Festa leaves every visitor with unique and unforgettable memories.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. I have traveled al over the world and they are definitively on the top service of the agencies I had used.

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
