Exploring the Ancient Tegalalang Rice Terraces

The Tegalalang Rice Terraces are one of Bali’s most iconic rural landscapes. Yet beyond their breathtaking beauty lies something deeper—the traditional agricultural wisdom that has sustained Bali for centuries.

Carved along the contours of the hills, the terraces cascade gracefully down the slopes. Their flowing lines resemble the fingerprints of the earth, recording a dialogue between humans and nature that has lasted for hundreds of years. Tall coconut palms are scattered across the fields, where tropical scenery blends seamlessly with pastoral poetry, creating a landscape unlike any other rice terraces in the world.

The best viewpoints are located along a stretch of roadside highland about one kilometer near the terraces. Here, thoughtfully designed restaurants and cafés line the ridge, offering visitors the chance to enjoy Indonesian cuisine while gazing out over the mesmerizing layers of green terraces below. As gentle breezes drift through the valley carrying the sweet scent of rice fields, this is Bali at its most serene.

Yet the Tegalalang Rice Terraces have endured for centuries not simply because of their beauty, but because of the remarkable irrigation system hidden beneath them—the Subak system. This ancient and sophisticated water management network channels water from volcanic lakes through carefully engineered canals, tunnels, and dams, distributing it layer by layer to every rice field. More importantly, Subak represents not only an engineering achievement but also the embodiment of Bali’s Hindu philosophy of harmony among the three realms: the balance between humans and the divine, among people themselves, and between humanity and nature. In 2012, the terraces were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the “Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the Subak System,” recognizing them as a priceless treasure of human agricultural civilization.

But such beauty is not meant to be admired only from afar—it is meant to be experienced.

High above the terraces stands the famous Bali jungle swing. The moment you soar outward, it feels as if you are a bird gliding into the tropical forest, with endless greenery stretching beneath your feet and a deep valley behind you. Though slightly thrilling, the swing offers an unforgettable perspective and one of the most photogenic spots in Bali. If you’re hoping to capture the perfect travel photo, this iconic swing is not to be missed.

After experiencing the terraces from above, you can follow the winding paths down into the valley for a peaceful countryside walk. Pass through bamboo groves, cross small bridges, observe the rice plants up close, and touch the irrigation channels that have carried water through these fields for centuries, all while enjoying the cool breeze drifting through the valley.

The Tegalalang Rice Terraces belong both to the fleeting beauty captured by a camera and to the timeless wisdom sought by the heart. Above all, they are one of Bali’s most precious gifts to every visitor.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
