1.Buses
In major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are available, with routes covering the city center and some urban areas. In other cities, transportation mainly relies on regular buses and minibuses.
Bus stops are not very densely distributed, and service intervals can be relatively long. During peak hours, congestion is common. However, fares are inexpensive.
2.Rail Transit
Indonesia’s rail transit system includes the metro, light rail, and commuter rail.
The metro currently operates only in Jakarta, with a single north–south line serving the city center and some surrounding districts. Phase II of the project is under gradual construction.
Light rail systems operate on limited routes in Jakarta and nearby areas, primarily connecting suburban areas with the city center. The number of stations is relatively small.
Commuter rail services cover Jakarta and its surrounding cities and are an important daily transportation option for local residents. Trains are often crowded during peak hours, while service intervals are longer during off-peak periods.
Rail transit is generally punctual and comfortable, and it helps avoid road congestion. However, due to the limited number of lines, it only meets part of the overall travel demand. Fares are relatively affordable.
3.Taxis and Motorcycle Taxis
Taxis and motorcycle taxis are among the main modes of transportation in Indonesia, offering flexibility in both timing and routes.
Taxis provide more space and a comfortable environment, making them suitable for travelers with multiple passengers or luggage. Motorcycle taxis are ideal for light travel and can move quickly through congested areas.
Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek are widely used in Indonesia to book both taxis and motorcycle taxis, with fast response times and transparent pricing.
4.Ferries and Speedboats
As an archipelagic country, Indonesia has more than 440 active ports. Ferry and speedboat services are widely available between islands and coastal cities, making them an essential means of inter-island transportation.
Most major ports in Indonesia operate regular ferry routes.
Speedboats are commonly used for short-distance travel between islands. They are fast but more affected by weather conditions.
