Renowned as one of the world’s three great black teas, Ceylon black tea is truly a gift to the world. Born from Sri Lanka’s pristine landscapes, crafted with exquisite skill, and cherished for its unique flavor and rich cultural heritage, every sip carries the essence of the island.
In the early 19th century, during the period of British colonial rule, Ceylon—today’s Sri Lanka—first developed its coffee industry. Merchants and estate owners cultivated coffee on a large scale, while also building railways and ports. The long railway line stretched from the mountains of Kandy all the way to the port of Colombo.
The coffee industry began to flourish, reaching its peak when a new plant disease—coffee rust—suddenly broke out on a large scale. Within just a decade, the coffee trees in Ceylon’s plantations withered one after another, and Sri Lanka’s coffee industry was gradually destroyed.
In an effort to recover their losses, the plantation owners cut down all the coffee trees and introduced a new crop, marking a transformation. And that new crop was—tea.
Blessed with Sri Lanka’s unique climate, Ceylon tea boasts a distinctive flavor that quickly captured the world’s attention, rising to the international stage and replacing coffee as the island’s proud new identity. And truly, no journey to Sri Lanka is complete without savoring a cup of authentic Ceylon black tea.
Ceylon black tea comes in three captivating varieties, shaped by the island’s elevations: high-grown teas from above 1,200 meters, mid-grown teas between 600 and 1,200 meters, and low-grown teas below 600 meters—each offering its own unique flavor and character.

1.High-Grown Tea (above 1,200 meters)
High-grown tea brews into a bright orange-red liquor, often rimmed with a golden halo. Its taste is delicate, its aroma refined and elegant, and the aftertaste pleasantly sweet. This variety is best enjoyed on its own, allowing you to savor the purest essence of tea.
Among high-grown teas, the most famous is Uva tea, a hallmark that appears in the product lines of Sri Lanka’s most renowned black tea brands.
2.Mid-Grown Tea (600–1,200 meters)
Mid-grown tea brews into a deep orange-brown liquor with a pronounced floral aroma. Its flavor is rich and full-bodied, making it perfect both for enjoying on its own or for preparing a creamy milk tea.
3.Low-Grown Tea (below 600 meters)
Low-grown tea brews into a dark, robust liquor, with a strong aroma and full-bodied flavor. It is ideal for making milk tea or other tea-based beverages.
Every variety of Ceylon black tea is worth savoring, offering a rich spectrum of flavors and a delightful tasting experience.
In some tea estates in Sri Lanka, visitors can even try hand-picking the leaves and learn how tea travels from the treetops to your cup.
