Nuwara Eliya

Nestled in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is famed for its stunning natural scenery, British charm, and world-class Ceylon tea.

Located at an elevation of over 1,800 meters, Nuwara Eliya enjoys a cool and pleasant climate, making it one of the country’s most popular summer resorts. During the British colonial period, many English settlers chose to live here for its ideal weather, leaving behind numerous colonial-style buildings and a distinct British lifestyle that still gives the city its nickname — “Little England”.

Nuwara Eliya is also one of the world’s renowned tea-producing regions. The surrounding hills are blanketed with lush tea plantations, where rows of tea bushes stretch neatly across the slopes, filling the air with a refreshing aroma.

Here, you won’t find palm trees or beaches — instead, you’ll be greeted by rolling tea gardens, mist-covered valleys, crisp mountain air, and a timeless English atmosphere. So, pour yourself a warm cup of tea and set off on a serene and elegant highland journey.

1.Weather

Surrounded by mountains, Nuwara Eliya enjoys mild temperatures throughout the year, with daytime averages ranging from 14°C to 22°C. The region has two distinct seasons — the dry season and the rainy season.

The rainy season typically occurs from May to June and from October to December. During these months, the weather in the highlands can be unpredictable, with increased rainfall, misty afternoons, and occasional short showers, adding a dreamy charm to the tea plantations. Travelers are advised to bring a jacket, non-slip shoes, and an umbrella.

From January to April, Nuwara Eliya experiences its sunniest period, with warm and dry weather — the best time of year to visit.

2.Popular Attractions

Tea Factories and Plantations: Nuwara Eliya is one of Sri Lanka’s most important tea-growing regions, home to numerous tea estates and factories. Visitors can learn about the entire tea-making process — from picking and fermenting to drying and grading — and enjoy a cup of world-famous Ceylon tea right where it’s produced.

Horton Plains National Park: A key eco-tourism area and part of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO World Natural Heritage, Horton Plains is the only national park in the country where hiking is permitted. The trail leads to a dramatic 880-meter cliff known as “World’s End”, offering breathtaking views and a sense of standing at the edge of the earth.

Victoria Park: It is a classic English-style garden shaded by lush trees and lined with winding paths. It’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to relax, admire flowers, and enjoy birdwatching.

Nuwara Eliya Golf Club: Located opposite Victoria Park, this 18-hole golf course with over a century of history is regarded as one of the finest in Asia.

4.Transportation Guide

Scenic Arrival: One of the most memorable ways to reach Nuwara Eliya is by taking the famous hill-country train from Kandy. The journey offers breathtaking views of tea plantations, forests, and misty mountains along the way — an experience that’s as beautiful as the destination itself.

On Foot: Nuwara Eliya is a compact town with many attractions located close to each other. Walking is a pleasant way to explore, allowing you to admire the British-style architecture and soak in the town’s peaceful atmosphere.

Tuk-Tuk: It is ideal for short trips within the town or nearby areas. It’s best to confirm the fare and route with the driver in advance to avoid misunderstandings.

Bus: There are a few local bus routes operating within Nuwara Eliya, though service can be infrequent and schedules irregular. Buses are more suitable for reaching outlying areas or the railway station.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
