Kandy

If you’re looking for the soul of Sri Lanka, Kandy is the place to find it. Nestled in a cool basin surrounded by mountains, it was the capital of the island’s last independent kingdom and remains a sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists.

The city unfolds around its scenic lake and hills—majestic and tranquil, yet full of vitality. With its rich cultural heritage, beautiful natural landscapes, and pleasant mountain climate, Kandy is ready to offer you a journey that is both memorable and deeply meaningful.

1.Weather

Kandy is located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka at an elevation of about 500 meters. Surrounded by mountains covered in beautiful tropical vegetation, it enjoys a cooler and more pleasant climate than the coastal areas.

Temperatures in Kandy remain stable throughout the year, with a distinct dry and rainy season. During the rainy season in the highlands, the weather can be changeable, and short afternoon showers are common. However, after the rain, the air becomes especially fresh and the mountains look even greener. The dry season is dry and comfortable, making it an ideal time for travel.

2.Popular Attractions

Sacred City of Kandy: This historic area encompasses the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake, the core palace buildings, as well as various religious structures, fortifications, and royal gardens. Owing to its religious significance, historical depth, architectural value, and cultural continuity, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.

Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa): The most important religious site in Kandy and all of Sri Lanka, it houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha and serves as a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. Every July and August, a grand festival known as the Esala Perahera is held in the area surrounding the temple.

Kandy Lake: Located in the heart of the city, this large man-made lake was built in 1807 by the last king of Kandy. Walking around the lake is the best way to experience the city’s tranquil beauty. When the breeze ripples the water’s surface, the shimmering reflections, the blend of old and new buildings nestled in lush greenery, and the flocks of birds gliding overhead reveal Kandy’s charm in its fullest.

Royal Palace Complex: This area includes the king’s palace, the queen’s residence, and other royal quarters, showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of the Kandyan kingdom.

Royal Botanic Gardens: Currently the second-largest botanical garden in Asia, it was once the royal gardens of the Kandyan kingdom. The garden is home to over 4,000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees, making it a wonderful place to spend time exploring.

Udawatta Kele Sanctuary: Located behind the Temple of the Tooth Relic, this protected area of ancient forest was known during the Kandyan era as the “Royal Pleasure Garden”, frequently visited by the monarchy. It is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers, with multiple walking trails and an abundance of plant and animal life to observe.

3.Shopping

Kandy Market: The largest market in Kandy, located near the train station, it is a bustling bazaar full of local life. The market has two floors: the ground floor mainly sells fruits, vegetables, spices, and seafood, while the upper floor offers sarees, shoes, hats, handicrafts, and more — all at relatively affordable prices.

Fruit Market: Lining both sides of the street are countless fruit stalls. Walking through them, you may feel as if you’re getting lost in the fragrance of fresh fruit.

Handicraft Shops: In the city center and around the Temple of the Tooth Relic, there are many handicraft stores selling beautifully made, locally inspired souvenirs.

4.Transportation Guide

Walking: The attractions in Kandy’s old city are fairly close to each other. Areas around Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Tooth Relic are especially suitable for exploring on foot.

Tuk-Tuk: It is the most convenient option for short trips, ideal for reaching locations slightly farther within the city.

Taxi: For longer journeys or when carrying more luggage, taxis offer a more comfortable choice.

5.AccommodationRecommendations

Area Around Kandy Lake: The area offers beautiful views of Kandy Lake, with a pleasant lakeside environment. Major attractions such as the Temple of the Tooth Relic are within walking distance, and the area has a concentration of restaurants and shops, making it ideal for travelers who enjoy natural scenery and a leisurely vacation.

Hillside Area Near Kandy Lake: For those seeking a quieter experience and stunning mountain views, consider staying in hotels or boutique accommodations located on the higher ground surrounding the city.

We traveled to China during 05th May to 17th May, 2026. Here goes our comment.

Guilin & Yangshuo:

Mr. Tom was an excellent guide in every aspect. He made every experience a great adventure and beyond. With his energy and knowledge, he adjusted the schedule with extra activities such as visiting the pandas, which made it extra special. He is good at explaining everything in a clear and succinct way, since much is guiding us, we loved our time in China and couldn’t have done it without Tom. He is also frequently offering helpful knowledge we very much appreciated. He also took great pictures of us. Mr. Kong, the driver is very courteous & flexible.

Zhangjiajie, Furong & Fenghuang town:

Allen is a capable and smart guide who has an optimistic and patient personality. We feel fortunate to have her. She is very good at arranging the schedule and navigating the towns’ sights in an efficient manner. We appreciate her help to negotiate with the photographer and provide us good seats and advice. The driver Mr. Lee is a safe & excellent driver who is courteous to us, other drivers and pedestrians. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Zhengzhou area. The hotel was excellent!

Beijing:

Ray Liu is a very knowledgeable and smart guide with excellent English. We learned a lot from him about Chinese history, culture, and current life. He is on time and capable. He shared with us a lot of interesting facts and information, and it was easy to talk to him because he is friendly, talkative and has fluent English. Ray knows his way around & got us everywhere, and it was nice there was a charge port in the back. He can be more courteous to bikers & pedestrians, but we got everywhere safely.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. Classic Japan Tour, Tokyo, Mt.Fuji, Osaka, Kyoto

Aug 2025

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.
