1.Weather

Colombo has a tropical monsoon climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons. Temperatures remain fairly consistent throughout the year, with an average of around 28°C.

The southwest monsoon brings rain from May to August, and the northeast monsoon brins rain from November to February. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during these periods, and the humidity is high, so it’s advisable to carry an umbrella or rain gear when traveling.

During the dry months, the weather is sunny and less humid, making it the best time to visit Colombo.

2.Popular Attractions

Colombo National Museum: The largest museum in Sri Lanka, it was established in 1877 and is a prime example of British Ceylon–era architecture. The building combines elements of Greek, Roman, and traditional Sri Lankan styles. Once the official residence of the British Governor, it is now the best place to explore Sri Lanka’s over 2,000 years of history.

Independence Square: A symbol of Sri Lanka’s independence, this is where the nation officially declared its freedom on February 4, 1948, after 450 years of colonial rule—marking the beginning of a new era. At the heart of the square is the Independence Memorial Hall, modeled after the architecture of the Kandyan Kingdom, the last independent monarchy before colonial rule. The design symbolically links the newly formed modern nation to its ancient royal heritage, bridging the historical divide caused by colonization.

Gangaramaya Temple: The most magnificent Buddhist temple in Colombo, Gangaramaya is also an important symbol of Sri Lankan Buddhist culture. Its architecture blends elements from Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, and China, showcasing a fusion of diverse cultural influences. The temple complex is intricate and beautifully designed, housing numerous Buddha statues and cultural relics, along with a small museum. It is an excellent place to experience the depth of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage.

Beira Lake: A peaceful green oasis in the heart of the city, the lake features clear water and lush trees along its shores, making it ideal for leisurely walks and sunset views. Extending from one side of the shore into the lake is a platform that supports an unusual “temple on the water”. Its design is highly distinctive and is the only Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka that does not follow traditional architectural styles.

Coastal Sightseeing Train Route: This iconic Sri Lankan train journey starts from Colombo and is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and extremely affordable tickets. The route combines stunning ocean views with glimpses of local life, making it an unforgettable and unmissable travel experience in Sri Lanka.

3.Food

Kollupitiya Market (Colombo Fruit & Vegetable Market): The entrance may look small, but the inside opens up into a bustling space filled with neatly arranged fruits and vegetables in every color. The variety is impressive, and the prices are very affordable.

Central Fish Market Complex: Famous for its fresh seafood, this market opens as early as 4 a.m. every day. If you want to pick the freshest fish, shrimp, and crab, make sure to arrive early!

4.Shopping

Pettah Market: The busiest and most vibrant market in Colombo, Pettah offers a wide variety of goods, including spices, tea, textiles, electronics, and more. It’s not only a great place to shop for local specialties, but also an opportunity to experience the everyday life and cultural atmosphere of the city up close.

5.Transportation Guide

Bus: Buses are inexpensive and cover both the city and surrounding areas. However, the routes can be complex, and the system operates in different ways—some buses stop only at designated stations, while others stop on request. For visitors unfamiliar with the area, it’s easy to get confused. If you plan to take a bus, it’s best to ask locals or the conductor in advance.

Taxi: Taxis must be booked through phone services or ride-hailing apps, and it can be difficult to find an available one directly on the street.

Tuk-Tuk: It is the most common mode of transport on the streets of Colombo. It’s recommended to hail one through an app or choose a tuk-tuk equipped with a meter.

6.Accommodation Recommendations

City Center Area: The area enjoys convenient transportation. It is close to major city attractions, with comprehensive shopping, entertainment, and dining facilities.

Lake Beira Area: The area boasts beautiful surroundings. It’s just a short drive from the city center and main attractions, with relatively convenient transportation.

Seaside Area: The area offers views of the Indian Ocean and the coastal railway; some hotels also provide beach leisure facilities.

Near Pettah Market Area: Colombo’s old town, it is full of shops, with many budget accommodation options at lower prices. The area has a strong local atmosphere, allowing for close-up experiences of local life and culture.

Near Galle Face Green Area: The area is a concentration of well-known, established 5-star hotels, with many colonial-era buildings nearby to admire.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
