Sri Lanka’s Minneriya National Park is not very large, covering only 90 square kilometers, yet it has no shortage of jungles, grasslands, rivers, and lakes.
The park boasts an excellent natural environment and abundant water year-round. During the dry season, water levels may drop but never completely dry up. In fact, the exposed areas of the lakes reveal fresh, tender grass, providing both water and food—an ideal habitat for wildlife. Many animals live here, including herds of elephants.
Minneriya National Park is Sri Lanka’s most important elephant habitat and hosts the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world. Throughout the year, visitors can spot elephant tracks deep within the park. During the dry season, wild elephants that normally roam the surrounding wilderness converge here in search of food and water. At their peak, the herds can number up to 300 elephants, creating the impression of a grand, festive gathering.

Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to track elephants, offering the greatest chance to see large herds gathered together.
Hop into an open-top jeep and enter Minneriya National Park—your off-road adventure begins here.
Driving along the dirt and gravel paths winding through the dense jungle, you will eventually reach the ultimate destination of your elephant-spotting journey. Along the way, you can also try to spot other wildlife hidden among the thick foliage—finding these small, camouflaged creatures is truly a test of keen eyesight.
Emerging from the jungle, you will encounter a vast grassland, at the heart of which lies a large man-made reservoir—Minneriya Tank. Built during the reign of King Mahasena in the 3rd century, it is one of Sri Lanka’s significant historical landmarks.
From a distance, flocks of birds can be seen playing along the water’s edge, creating a serene and beautiful scene. Venturing further, the massive herds of elephants come into view.
Stopping the jeep, you may find elephants right beside you. Amid this spectacular scenery, you can quietly enjoy the unforgettable moment of encountering these majestic creatures.
