1.Weather

Negombo enjoys warm weather all year round, with average daytime temperatures ranging from 28°C to 32°C. Negombo experiences distinct dry and rainy seasons.

The main rainy season lasts from May to September, with frequent showers, so it’s advisable to bring rain gear when traveling during this period.

During the dry season, the weather is sunny and less humid, making it ideal for beach activities — the best time of the year to visit Negombo.

2.Popular Attractions

Negombo Fish Market: Recommended by the travel guide ‘Lonely Planet’, the Negombo Fish Market offers a vivid glimpse into the fishing village culture of Sri Lanka. Here, you can witness fishermen carrying on traditions that have lasted for centuries—handling their daily catch, drying fish in the sun, and engaging in other traditional practices. These authentic scenes also make it a paradise for photographers. It’s best to visit early in the morning to experience the lively, bustling atmosphere at its peak.

St. Mary’s Church: Originally built in 1874, this magnificent church took 50 years to complete and features a Neoclassical architectural style. The interior is adorned with stunning religious frescoes and ornate decorations.

Negombo Lagoon: One of Sri Lanka’s most famous lagoons, it is surrounded by vast mangrove swamps. Visitors can take a boat ride to explore the lagoon—fresh fruit is often served on board, and any leftovers can be fed to the monkeys when you reach the deeper parts of the lagoon.

Dutch Canal: Originally constructed by the Dutch for transporting cinnamon, the canal is now a classic sightseeing cruise route. Cruising through the heart of the town, you’ll enjoy glimpses of local life along the riverbanks.

Negombo Beach: Spacious and tranquil, this beach is one of the best spots to admire the spectacular sunset views.

3.Food

Negombo Fish Market: The freshly caught seafood is sold right at the market, offering a wide variety of choices such as tuna, lobster, squid, and more. It’s the best place to experience the freshest local catch of the day.

4.Shopping

Negombo Market: One of the largest local markets in the area, it offers a wide range of daily necessities and local goods. Walking through the bustling stalls among the locals allows you to experience the authentic daily life of Negombo.

5.Transportation Guide

Tuk-Tuk: The most common mode of transport in Negombo, tuk-tuks are affordable and ideal for short trips. It’s best to agree on the fare before boarding.

Walking: Some major attractions are within walking distance, making it convenient to explore on foot.

Bicycle: Many hotels offer free or rental bicycles, perfect for visiting nearby attractions or heading to the beach.

Taxi: Taxis can be arranged through hotels or local car rental companies. They are suitable for groups or travelers carrying multiple or large pieces of luggage.

Bus routes cover the main parts of the city, but service is infrequent, so checking the timetable ahead of time is recommended.

6.Accommodation Recommendations

Area near the Beach: Within walking distance to the shore, this area offers beautiful scenery and a wide range of accommodation options. With plenty of dining and entertainment facilities, it is convenient, lively, and ideal for beach lovers.

City Center Area: Centrally located with easy access to major attractions in Negombo, this area is perfect for exploring the city’s history and culture.

This is the second time we plan a trip with Best Asia Tours and we love their service and attention to detail as well as their willingness to make your trip memorable and anything you want possible. Their planning is impecable and very efficient and if anything is not as you expected they will work to make sure it is. we did a 21 day itinerary for 7 including 2 grandmas back on 2018 and we just went back a couple of weeks ago with our daughter for 12 days and had an awesome time. We are already planning the next one. Zoe and Eric who had help us with the travel planning were both amazing their speed to comeback with the itineraries and changes is impressive and not matter how many times you ask them to look at changes or different hotels etc they are always willing to help with the most wonderful attitude . All the guides we had on the different cities and regions have be incredible . I can not recommend them enough. I have traveled al over the world and they are definitively on the top service of the agencies I had used.

Best Asia Tours did a really good job planning our itinerary in Japan. Some times we had issues coming up I think mostly related to cultural differences, but our agent was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and the trip was perfect. The hotels are centrally located, very easy to access to the city center. The guide and driver are friendly and nice. We spend a pleasant and amazing journey there.

The trip was great and our agent performed great. We were pleasantly surprised with how responsive they were and with the trip that they planned. Very professional. A previous agent told us we couldn’t pull off a trip with so many stops but it was not a problem and the pace of the trip was good for us. We don’t like sitting still in one spot for too long. The guides in each city did well and a couple were excellent.
