Sri Lanka has a long and rich history that dates back to 463 BC, when the Kingdom of Anuradhapura (Sinhala Kingdom) was established. However, in 1505, the island fell into the vortex of colonial rule. Over the next 450 years, it successively became a colony of Portugal, the Netherlands, and Britain, losing its full sovereignty.
It was not until February 4, 1948 that, after relentless effort and struggle, Sri Lanka finally freed itself from colonial rule through peaceful means and formally declared its independence. To commemorate this historic moment, February 4 has been designated as Sri Lanka’s National Day and Independence Day.

Each year on this day, Sri Lanka holds grand celebrations across the country. From official flag-raising ceremonies and traditional parades to folk music, dance performances, and religious festivities, people from all regions take part in the lively and joyful atmosphere of National Day.
The official celebrations are mainly held at Independence Square in Colombo. The ceremony begins with a flag-raising event, followed by a 21-gun salute to commemorate the restoration of national sovereignty. After the flag-raising ceremony, the President delivers a speech, and the event continues with a grand military parade featuring the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and civil defense units, showcasing the nation’s military strength and unity.
Among the folk celebrations, the most spectacular is the parade joined by representatives from all walks of life. People march along the main streets, waving national flags and banners, dancing to the rhythm of lively music. If you happen to come across the parade, you’re welcome to join in the fun—dancing and celebrating alongside the locals.
In addition, no matter where you are in Sri Lanka on this day, you’ll find people gathering in local squares or parks to celebrate together. In these places, you can enjoy traditional Sri Lankan music, dance, and theatrical performances, and experience the vibrant artistic charm of the country’s rich culture.
